Suspect left his wallet on counter after robbery
MADISON - Madison police are looking for a 23-year-old Huntsville man who left his wallet and identification behind while robbing a store at gunpoint on Thursday.
"He definitely flunked Criminal 101," said Lt. Tim Albright.
Thanks to the evidence he left behind, officers are looking for Brent Deon Scott of 2407 Oakwood Road. Once apprehended, he'll be charged with first-degree robbery, Albright said.
No one was hurt in the 5 p.m. robbery of Advance America Cash Advance, 8572 Madison Blvd.
"It was very traumatic to the clerk," Albright said.
The clerk told officers a man she was later able to identify as Scott walked into the store and asked to apply for a loan, Albright said.
The clerk asked for his identification to begin the process. He took his wallet from his pants pocket and put it on the counter.
Albright said the clerk turned away to get some paperwork. When she turned back, she told officers Scott was pointing a pistol at her, demanding cash.
The clerk told officers that, after she put money in a backpack for Scott, he demanded she show him the back door and he ran away.
The wallet contained an Alabama photo identification and a Social Security card, and the store clerk was able to identify Scott as the robbery suspect.
"People can sometimes do stupid things," Albright said.
It's not the first time a suspect has left behind evidence that led to his arrest. Albright can think of at least six instances over the past 25-plus years he's been an officer.
"It's not uncommon," he said. "But it doesn't happen every day."
One that immediately came to Albright's mind was a suspect who dropped his pager after breaking into a business safe. Albright heard it buzzing on the floor while dusting for fingerprints. The suspect was calling his own pager - trying to find it - when Albright found it instead.
"It helps us crush crime and bring criminals to justice" when suspects goof up, he said.
Albright suspects such mistakes happen because of a combination of things, including a lack of common sense and being nervous.
"It takes a lot of nerve to do something like this in the first place," he said. "They are probably just as scared as the person they're robbing, because that person could easily pull out a gun and shoot them dead right there."
Albright said Friday afternoon it was unclear how much money was taken in the Thursday robbery.
He asks that anyone with information on Scott's location call Madison police at 722-7190
