'Been thinking of getting a place in either NH or VT...both absolutely beautiful.  Give me the skinny on which of them is a better place to live...taxes, guns, cost of living, stuff to do, government, outdoors, etc.  

This is a great opportunity for interstate flaming and a chance to vent small state syndrome...

VT's biggest advantage from a gun owner's perspective is that they have no CCW requirements … just walk into VT and started carrying. Best CCW policy in the country next to Alaska.

OTOH, NH CCW policy is "Shall Issue" and it's only 10$ for 4 years.

You can have a suppresor in NH, but not in VT … Some kind of Fish & Game restriction. Apparently they fear that people with suppressors  would sneak up on cute little animals and kill their entire family.

Cost of living is about the same in both states … NH doesn't have a Sales or State Income tax, so that's a plus. Property taxes are higher in NH (fuck you very much Jeanne Shaheen). NH is possibly a tad more job friendly, as our proximity to Massachusetts makes commuting an option.

You asked about Government … can't say much about VT, but NH has a pretty good Government setup that does a great job of keeping things the way we like them … Part-Time legislature, 2 year term Governor, 400 State Reps that can't agree on anything … Basically the Government is always on notice and has a very limited amount of time to do any damage, if they screw up, chances are good they'll lose their job in a few months, so they tend to kep their ear very close to the ground and actually pay attention to what the people want. You'll hear a lot of people crowing about how NH is just another liberal blue state … it's just not true. Like most states, the cities are blue and hold a lot of sway over the rest of us, but there are parts of this state that you'll swear you woke up in the deep south.

as awesome as VT is, it is full of communists. i'm not using that as some kind of derisive term for liberals either, which VT also has TONS of, but real actual commies.

in fact, i'd say that VT is probably THE most liberal NE state, but somehow has managed to keep legislation at a minimum.

From my experience spending several years in different areas of VT and NH, NH just seems a little more conservative to me.  I really love both states though, if you can find employment in either VT or NH, you probably won't hate living in either state.

I don't know much about VT, so I can tell you why I moved to NH

1. NH has some of the best gun shops I've been to, including the ones in the southern states.
2. NH has no income tax or sales tax.
3. NH has virtually no firearms laws. Getting a CCW permit takes a couple of days, no prints. This gives us reciprocity unlike states with no permits, without all the hassle.
4. NH has many towns that still vote a conservative majority. Even though we have a libtard governor, he knows not to touch our gun laws.
5. NH is 2nd in the nation in terms of financial independence from the feds.
6. NH has some great farming land and beautiful scenery.
7. Cost of living is low the further into the country you get, but we also have a lot of farm fresh stands and inexpensive places to buy groceries; if you're smart, you'll be able to get food pretty cheap.
8. A case of 500 .223 is currently running $180.
9. Merrimack NH has a 600-yard outdoor range.

NH is a bit more built up than VT.

Also we have a little bit of coastline.

VT is more rural. Lots of hippies and NY transplants in VT.

NH is nice because there is no income or sales tax. Down side is the massholes are migrating north and brining their Kennedy Cooties with them

I'm in PA now but have always loved NH/VT.  I spent 5 years at a camp on Lake Winnipesauki (sp?) and hiked most of the Appal. Trail in both states.  You just can't beat the Presidential Range for the views...crowded though.

What part of NH is the best for outdoors, hunting/fishing, gun clubs & shooting, perhaps even some farming, yet not so far from civilization you need a helicopter.

Sounds like NH trumps VT in every way...what say you VT'ers?

Pro … NH touches less Canada than Vermont.

Con … NH touches more Massachusetts than Vermont.

Although, the latter has some bonuses … since all of our retail is concentrated along the major highways in and out of Mass, we get a big boost to our economy by weekenders from Mass coming up to save 5%.

I've always driven through VT to get to NH.

I spent the first 13 summers of my life in NH visiting my family around the Meridith/Laconia area and absolutely love it.  Gorgeous country!  Up around North Conway is great if you like hiking.  The presidentials, although low in elevation are very much real mountains.

thats actually true, I'm not really supposed to tell anyone but we cum in all the syrup, it was kind of a big joke we started to screw with the flatlanders that sorta snowballed (if you'll excuse the expression) until we were all doing it.

Shootemup where you movin' to?  I'd like to get a place, maybe 5+ acres for a small farm and horses, in the country, and still be able to see the Presidentials from my porch.  How much for ground if I build my own house?  As a PA boy, I'm used to snow, but school me on winters in NH.  Also...any good conservative churches?

I have some strict
requirements, so we're basically looking all over the place. I'm trying to keep it to an hour or less to Manchester Airport as I need to fly out to FL often, and to keep the drive to Long Island where our family is reasonable.



I'm looking for a decent sized, newer house on 50+ acres.  I've been finding  a few, but we won't be in NH to look into the prospects until after the new year.  It seems like the R/E market there is DEAD FLAT.  I've seen many houses on the market for 1-3+ years.



I think you should be able to get land for $2-$10K and acre, depending on how much you buy.  The lessyou buy, themore it is usually.



I don't know about churches, but I'm sure you won't have a problem finding one you like.  Winters is something I'm worried about, and the only thing I find solace in is I'll get into snowmobiling and snow shoeing.

Moved to Cheshire County NH about a year ago and it's the best place me and my family have lived to date.
We have a great Scout Troop, great Church, lots of Mountain Biking/Snow-Mobiling, good prices on food etc. Seems generally very conservative, politically, though you may not know
it from this past election, but that seemed to be epidemic everywhere.

I work in Mass. Mostly in Cambrdige/Boston area so I spend quite a bit of time in the car, but it's worth it to go home up there.

PS. If you do the live in NH/work in MA thing, you will have to pay MA income tax. Just keep that in mind.

New Hampshire and Vermont have always been a bit at odds.  New Hampshire decided they wanted the entire Connecticut river to themselves, so they informed Vermont of that decision.

"Fuck you, Vermont," NH said.  "The river is ours."

"Fuck you, New Hampshire bitches.  You can keep the fucking river.  Now you maintain all the bridges!"

"Doh!" replied New Hampshire.

The NH relationship with Maine is worse, though.  We are still smarting over the Portsmouth Shipyard being located in "Maine".  It clearly is not, no matter what any Mainer has to say about it.

Finally, a brief story about Massachusetts that was told to me by an old salt in my town.  I don't know if it is true or not, but it is a good story regardless.  

New Hampshire doesn't have a sales tax.  This caused many a serf to leave Mass in order to buy their sweetmeats and other sundries.  Massachusetts did not find this wootworthy.  

They decided to put a Mass state trooper at one of the more popular shopping areas, and then any Mass license plates were radioed back to the border.  Those cars were pulled over and the occupants were required to pay the Mass sales tax on their purchases.

New Hampshire State Police then impounded the Mass "lookout" car and IIRC charged the officer with loitering.

Massachusetts, being whiny bitches, cried that they wanted their car back.

It was sold at auction.

Cheshire county the best bet?  How 'bout Franconia?  I'd like to stay close to the mountains...I checked a website and 5 acre building lots in Franconia are going for over $100k...yikes!  Any other ideas for inexpensive land?

Well, I live in VT and have all my life so here's my take on it.  I will agree that VT has unfortunately become more liberal over the years due mainly to all of the out of staters moving here because it's so nice.  When they get here they slowly try to change it to be like the place they left.  VT has a mix of parties in government (Republican Governor and LT. Governor to go along with socialist Sanders in the Senate).  We do have very friendly gun laws, beautiful countryside and very decent people once you get outside of the liberal stronghold of Burlington and a few other places.  Taxes are pretty high due to the lack of industry but that's the price you pay if you want to stay rural.  The housing market is pretty good right now, houses costs have gone up over the years due to the influx of out of staters moving here but cheap compared to a lot of other states.  You can get a real nice place for $275,000 and up with an  ample amount of land.  I go to NH a few times a year (mostly to hit the outlet stores or the coast) and it too is nice so you can't go wrong with either place in my opinion.
