If the length of the 30-06 is ok, and if the trunion can handle the PSI of a 30-06 (I don't know the numbers off hand) you still have to deal with the fact that it's a rimless cartridge.

PSI shouldn't be a problem but you're dead right about the rim situation. So now, on top of getting someone to make a barrel, you also have to have them make a new bolt/extractor assembly. Oh, and you'll have to lengthen the ejector somehow since the rim of the 54R is so much bigger, and the ejector is an integral part of the left side internal rail.... ... on second thought, its not possible. |

Nope, the other posters are correct about the massive difference in the head measurements, but don't forget that the metric designation for our .30-06 is 7.62*63. There is no way you could get the action to digest the longer round without literally cutting it in half, and stretching it. (but then, what would you use for a mag, a BAR mag?)

It would be pretty impractical.
The .30-06 is almost a 1/2" longer than the 7.62x54R. |

You know they make a Saiga .30-06, right?
They just don't sell many of them in the states. They come in a plastic shell but they can be "normalized", it just takes a LOT of work. |

I don't like the skiiny li'l barrel on them.
I was just wondering if I'm going to go through the trouble of putting a heavier barrel on, could a caliber change be done as well. Forgot about the rimmed cartridge. Not a smart question though in retrospect: I realize that I only want a psl cause the mags adn ammo are cheap now. So how do I re barrel a PSL? same caliber, just much much heavier barrel. |

Even that would be very impractical.
You'd have to find a .311" barrel blank and have it custom machined including all the proper journal diameters for an RPK gas block, RPK front sight tower, trunnion, RPK handgaurd retainer, and small enough to fit under the handgaurds. Then have the thing installed and headspaced. It would probably cost more than the gun to have all this done. And you'd only end up with a barrel slightly heavier than the standard one. You could make your own gas block and front sight tower if you were a machinist, thus allowing a much heavier barrel. Trying to turn the PSL into something it isn't is a losing proposition. They CAN be improved, but it's only worth pursuing if you really like the platform and are doing just to see what can be done, rather than setting an unrealistic goal and trying to reach it. If you just want cheap ammo, the PSL isn't for you anyway. '54R isn't that cheap any more. For a lot less money you could get a half-dozen Mosin Nagants, pick the most accurate one, than recrown the barrel and bed the action and you'll get much, much better results.

Just buy a 30-06 Garand and put a scope on it. You'll have a more accurate rifle and it will cost you much less than R&Ding a caliber conversion on a PSL.
Isn't 7.62x54R cheaper than 30-06??? So why even bother trying to convert a PSL to 30-06? |

You still run into clearance issues with the hand guards (doable), dimension issues with the gas block (doable, but maybe only by a custom made one). |

You probably wouldn't see much of a difference in accuracy. if anything, cut the barrel down to maybe 20", saw this done with a PSL on this site I believe. The poster said it gave a little tighter groups. |
