How do you tell if an upper is a true Colt M4? Are there some identifying marks? Thanks.

One way to tell is to check for feed ramps on the inside of the upper, below the chamber. That`s a patented proprietory feature of the colt uppers. HTH

Do the feed ramps serve any purpose?  (i.e. do they make it more reliable than, say, a Bushmaster M4gery?)

They're also stamped "4" or "M4" just above the cloverleaf where the gas tube goes into the upper....
