Meh...

All I need to practice is maximizing the sound of racking the slide. That always ends the fight right then and there. What does Clint Smith know?

Some advantages I'd add (vice EBRs):

a) Sights mounted close to bore axis (more accurate shots at very short distance).

b) No pistol grip on standard models––better for weapon's retention.

Something like an M-1 carbine has similar advantegous, of course . . .

I would offer this......

I know you say "not to scan with your muzzle" but sometimes you may "wish you brought your gun with you".

If you're looking around corners or in dark places..."bring your gun".

Oh, and it is IMPERATIVE to have a light.

EDIT:  forget to add this:  NEVER, EVER use your shotgun as an impact weapon or to "buttstroke" someone.  There have been two cases over the years where cops have either hit a door or a suspect with the shotgun and had it slamfire.  Remington 870's are especially prone to this.  I want to say it was an Ohio cop but during a raid they buttstroked a non-compliant fighting suspect and the gun went off....can't remember if it killed a cop or another resident of the house.   I guess you could say that goes for most guns––-they're not impact weapons.

EDIT 2 :  Thanks for always putting more 'gun related' topics in GD

I like it.  It mirrors my favorite instructors mantra:

"Put a working, loaded gun in your hand and shoot the bad guy.  Repeat as necesary" "Really, how hard is it.  Even you should be able to follow that avslash"

If you're handy with a drill, all you need is the lug (you can buy at any Wal-Mart or K-Mart hunting section, sold next to the slings).  I prefer the magazine end caps with the lug installed in them for the front.  (Usually, need to go to a gun store for that one, or order it).

Oh yeah, great thread.

I find I like to keep my trigger finger out of the trigger guard when reloading from the shouldered position.  Its not a big deal, and I'm not a trigger finger nazi, and I'm not giving you a hard time.  I just have found that while your support hand is off the gun you have a much greater moment on your firing hand, which some new-comers will dangerously and accidentally compensate for by pulling up with their trigger finger.  You know what works for you, I just think it might be worth mentioning to learners.

Great thread O_P

I've taken a Tactical Shotgun class earlier this year and going into it, I did not have high expectations. After the 8 hour class, I walked away with a new attitude towards the shotty and new skills for my tactical toolbox

I don't know when the safety comes into play, but if you don't practice a lot with a shotgun it's easy to forget the safety is on when it comes time to put up or shut-up.

Folks have been known to miss a nice deer or two because they shouldered the weapon and it wouldn't fire (forgot the safety).

Hey O_P,

Is Clint (or any of the other instructors you keep in touch with) developing doctrine for the mag-fed Saigas?  Everybody I've met just runs them as rifles, but... they're not rifles.

They're neat guns that don't fit the traditional tube-fed practices.  I'm especially curious if anybody's come up with a way to do the Switch-to-Slug drill with a mag-fed system.

O_P again, doing what he does best -

DELIVER

I can tell you all of that is exactly what they trained us to do in the Criminal Justice Academy.  Spot on!

_MaH

ETA: If I may ride on the coat-tails for a few seconds ––

If a purpose of your shotgun is going to be home defense, you should definitely consider a barrel with rifle sights, and put night sights on them.  A flashlight will do a good job illuminating down range, but this is still meaningless unless you can find your sights.  NS will help you acquire them much faster.

Remington 870 will meet ALL these needs
