So today I shot my new savage 93, 17 hmr for the first time. I thought all the stories about the 17's phenomenal accuracy were mainy BS. How wrong I was, I am a believer now.
The rifle: savage 93 with leupold 2-7x33 rifleman scope, bipod just to sight it in. Used hornady 17 grain V max. 
The results: 50 yards, bench and bipod used. 
Needless to say this is my go to gun for any small critters now. |

I can't wait to go hunting now. Will be able to tag squirrels way on out. I honestly didn't think I had that good of shooting in me. I'm still amazed by the group.

It will only do it with Hornady 17gr ammo.

I just bought my wife a savage in .17 mach2. She's a brand new shooter and right out of the box she was shooting 2.5" groups at 100 yards from a bench.
ETA: has anyone else noticed how much better their groups are/were with the hornaday factory ammo than with others? i bought a few boxes of the Eley and it's groups are easily twice the size. |

Had to be different and go with a lever action .17 :
50 yards looks like this: 
It's lighter than my 10/22, and hits alot harder. Great round for small varmints. |

What are the differences between .17 HMR and .17 Mach 2? I take it you can not shoot both in the same chambering.

ETA: and the HMR ammo, while having a little better balistics, can cost almost 4 times as much. comparible to the price difference of .22 lr and .22 magnum. |

Precision, solid based bullets. Regular rimfire has a heeled bullet with a hollow base. That is why they can never be as accurate.

yep, my .17 is like a laser. Took out 30 squirrels last year, used only 30 rounds at 100-120 yards with a 10x super sniper.

My only gripe about the .17hmr..
When I first bought it, a box of ammo was $6-7 a box.. and is now $13-15 a box.. For 30 cents a shot.. hand loading .223 is looking pretty good :) Very fun rifle to shoot though |

I am now a believer in that Savage 17. Three friends and I took 3 day bird hunrting trip to the Allagash this fall. One brought a Savage 17 HMR, the other 3 of us brought 10/22s and a Savage 22 bolt for plinking on Sunday. The target rack consisted of a 2x4 with holes drilled to accept the Dumb Dumb lolli pops, and various coins, we then graduated to cutting off golf Tees. What an accurate little gun. If I didn;t have 3 10/22s I would have one

Those of you with the Savage, did you adjust your trigger pull? Mine is incredibly light, which tends to affect my accuracy.

I have a CZ 452 Varmint in .17 HM2 that's an absolute tack driver. Consistently .5 MOA. Not bad for a $350 rifle shooting $0.10/round ammunition!
A .24'' center to center 5 shot group shot at 50 yards, prone, with a sand bag as a rest.

Mine was bought a year ago... and came with the newer accutrigger... It will only adjust down so far... before you need to clip a coil or two from a spring... After making the changes to the trigger... it was a whole 'nuther gun. 
I think I saw an article (with pics) about the procedure over on the rimfire forums... The rear-most spring is the one I had to clip...

My Savage 93R17 will outshoot my Marlin 917VS.
Also I tend to get better groups with Remington 17HMR out of the Savage and Hornady VMAX out of the Marlin. |

I have killed literally hundreds of ground hogs with my Marlin 17VS. Never had one get away. Only had to shoot two more than once. All the rest dropped right where they stood. Head shots are easy out to 100 yds. and my preferred spot to hit them up close and off hand.
My rifle shoots right at .5" ctc at 100 yds. with hornandy. The hornandy 20 grn stuff shoots about 1" at 100. |

He was running down the fence line and I whistled, he stopped and turned to look at me (big mistake) and I shot him in the chest, just a little to the left of the breast bone. He jumped and tried to bite himself in the chest, then turned and began to step forward and fell over dead. I think if I hit the breast bone he would have lived and taken off wounded. I think with good shot placement you could take larger coyotes and feral dogs, but I think that is the upper limit of the .17HMR. |

I think Hornady is the most accurate, but the Eley is also very accurate as well. |

I was at Bass Pro Shop saw this tagged at $329, and after reading this post I went for it. The best part it was missed priced, it rang up $399, but they had to give it to me for $329.
