Are AR15's and AK's banned California?

Obviously you slept through the past 2 years...  The were banned by the bill known as SB-23!

Not exactly, in fact there are probubly more AR15 type rifles in California than any other 3 states combined.

Sales of AR15 type rifles are currently heavily restricted. Possession of AR15 type rifles requires registration of the rifles in the owner or co-owners name(s).

My wife and I own 9 registered AR15 type rifles. Each jointly registered to both of us.

I shot at least one of them once a week or more.

If by "Banned" You mean, can a California resident go out right now and buy one, then Yes they are banned.

In California all assault rifles had to be registered by a certain date that has unfortunately passed.
The rifles that were registered cannot be sold to anyone except a licensed assault weapons dealer, they cannot be bought by or sold to any other person. In fact, the registered assault rifles cannot even be given to family or friends, not even a son or daughter can receive a legally registered assault rifle from a parent.

Unless the law is changed, there will definitely come a time when no privately owned assault weapons will legally be owned in California.

The saddest thing about this is that CA typically "leads the pack" when it comes to regulation and laws.  The passage of this law means that other States are considering it and that it will likely eventually be adopted from coast to coast.

Registered "Assault weapons" may be transferred to an AW dealer or ANYONE outside California who can legal possess that type of rifle.

If your children were over 18 and living with you then you could also list them as co-registrants.

I would bet there are even more illegal ars than there are legal Ars.. but this is just a guess.

If I lived in CA, I wouldn't "register" mine.  If they arrested me, I'd challenge the law as Ex Post Facto.  Of course a liberal judge would probably rule that the "safety" of the public is more important than any "outdated" notion of Constitutional Rights like Ex Post Facto.  Then, he'd send me to jail for life...while the gang bangers, murderers, and rapist go scot free...  Never mind the FACT that so-called "assualt rifles" are hardly ever used in crime.
