All of my life i've always believed a yard is bigger than a meter.
This is the way I think it is: Yard = 3 feet Meter = about 2 and a half feet Am I incorrect?? Lately, I've been hearing that a meter is bigger than a large.. and it's like WTF??? |

a meter is bigger than a yard.
I ould do the math and tell you exactly but I don't want to at this point 100 cm= meter 1"=2.54cm 36" =1 yard goodluck Scratch |
|
Yes a meter is bigger...thats why we use them here in Canada...EVERYTHING IS BIGGER!!
Speaking of which. When do you Americans plan on taking on the metric system? Your military uses it does it not? |

WTF, you have a computer, and access to the net and you ask this?
1 yd = 36 inches 1 inch = 25.4 mm Fill in the blanks. Must I do the math for you? [;)] d |
|
1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches
1 inch = 25.4 mm 36 x 25.4 = 914.4 mm 914.4 mm / 1000 mm = 0.9144 meters So 1 yard = 0.9144 meters 1 meter = 1.0936 yards = 39.37 inches Maff 101 fer the Publik Sckool Grads |
|
ok here goes.
as above 1 inch is 25.4 mm a yard is 3 feet or 3 x 12 inches or 36 inches Therefore in mm 1 yard is 36 inches x 25.4mm/inch=914.4mm a meter is 1000 mm or 100 cm or 10dm so if you want a metre in inches its: 1000mm divided by 25.4mm/inch = 39.3700 inches Did you happen to notice that working with the metric system just involves the shifting around of the decimal and you can do it all in your head? Simple isnt it. |
|
Simple, yes, but don't forget that the FRENCH invented the metric system, and have relentlessly promoted it.
Wonder why????? |
|
Hey do you mean that they actually made something that works!!!
No wonder the promote it.. The Imperial System SUCKS!!! Metric Rules.... It is as plain as day. |
|
Remember playing "swords" with the yard and meter sticks?
Then why in god's name was the YARD stick ALWAYS bigger than the meter stick?!?!?!?!? |
|
Sounds like your meter stick was a little short on one end.
A name like "computerguy" and you're asking a question like this? And arguing with the answer? Is your mouse bigger than your monitor? The cord's longer, so it must be. Duh! |

What do you call that arm like thing that makes it worth taking your glider into orbit?
What was the Avro Arrow? Why was the US State department terrified of it? What is POUTINE!! ( actually its real gross) |

I don't know about you guys, but my yard is significantly bigger than a meter. In fact, it's over an order magnitude larger than a meter in both length and width.z
|
|
Well the Ross was a really great rifle. It was very accurate and used extensively by snipers.
The Americans on the other hand. used modified Mausers and Enfields. Hmmmm In WWII you used M1 Garands invented by an ex patriot Canadian. |

So ...
100 meters is 100* 1.093 = 109.3 Yrds 1000 meters in 1 Kilometer which is 1093 yrds which .621 Miles or 1 mile is 1.61 Kilometers( 1/.621). Okay.. I get it. |

Quoted: Yes a meter is bigger...thats why we use them here in Canada...EVERYTHING IS BIGGER!! Speaking of which. When do you Americans plan on taking on the metric system? Your military uses it does it not? View Quote We don't need to. We've got a system no one else can figure out. If we converted to metric, then the whole world wouldn't be so dependent upon us for everything. The Japanese would have been able to copy all our stuff decades sooner if they knew how to do the conversion. That's why all their stuff was miniaturized until lately. Hey, you owe me big time--last weekend a buddy of mine was bored and decided to go invade Canada. The only way I could talk him out of it was to remind him that there was nothing worthwhile to do with the whole frigging country after he had it. You aren't from Quebec by chance, are you? [:D] |

Nope, not the same thing.

Well, I've got a meter in my yard but I've never gone outside and tried to fit my yard into the meter. I don't think the Gas Company would appreciate it either.
So, the yard is bigger! |
|
[red]NO[red]
Yard = 3 feet Meter = 3.2808 Feet Mike |

This thread is like watching a train wreck...I can't NOT read it!
|
|
Well we have to define the terms first...are you speaking of an imperial yard or common. The length often varies depending on the stature of the person doing the measurements. And for the meter side, are you using the original scale or the size agreed upon in the World congress of weights and measures or the standard using wavelengths? Perhaps we should also define the other words in your question to derive an accurate respose to your question....
Understan that this IS America and we have trouble with the definition of IS....... Hey I wasn't having SEX....just a BJ..... |

Quoted: What do you call that arm like thing that makes it worth taking your glider into orbit? View Quote You mean the problematic P-O-S arm on Alpha (wonder why the US is building a better one - That WORKS)? Hmm I wonder how many spaceships or space stations the Canadians have built?? |

Some of the responses are hilarious! I'm glad I didn't start the thread though.

Actually, Canada was once at the cutting edge of spacecraft production. Unfortunately, the inevitable teething problems that accompany any leap in technology caused short-sighted penny-pinching politicians to scuttle the project.
http://tsw.odyssey.on.ca/~dmackechnie/Avrocar.htm I've seen declassified films of the craft. Its rate of climb to operational altitude (two feet) was impressive, to say the least. |
|
Well, MY yard is bigger than a meter. Its about seven acres.
And actually, I've got two meters - one on the house and one on the garage. Uhhh, maybe I better go back to sleep now [BD] |
|
I feel obligated to point out that my yard is approximately 2.83 acres in size. None of the meters on the side of my house are more than 1 foot across.
You do the math. |

To my newly found friend Scarecrow:
Sorry, new buddy, but some of this Canada bashing is LOL funny. "John Garand was deported from Cananda for having an original idea." "ANYBODY would be terrified at the thought of a Canadian flying (however temporarily) a Canadian aircraft." Yuck it up, Scarecrow. It ain't personal (OK, maybe it is) But it IS funny stuff. |

Metric measurements are all wrong for practical purposes:
A Millimeter is useful for measuring small things. A Centimeter is too short. A Meter is a too long. A Kilometer is too short. A Milliliter is not enough. A Liter is not enough. A Gram is too light. A Kilogram is too heavy. |
|
My yard is bigger than a meter, in fact it is 46 meters by 104 meters which is 4784 square meters which is 1.182 acres. 1 meter (squared) is .000247 acres which is a very small yard. How big is your yard?

Hey computer guy, which part of Oregon do you live?
BTW, don't listen to these guys. Judging at how many posts you have under your belt, you probably were excited to post a new message to warm your welcome, but these guys will flame their own Moms, so don't take it personal. Later |

"In WWII you used M1 Garands invented by an ex patriot Canadian."
So was he a formerly patriotic Canadian? Or, was he an EXPATRIATE? Obviously the Canadian educational system is no better than that in the U.S. |
