Nobody should get back more than they pay in, on that I think we're all agreed.
When payroll taxes are taken into account though the number of people who actually do, and the amount by which they do, is a lot less than most of you seem to think.
Like it or not payroll taxes are being used as general revenue, and the entitlement programs function as a social safety net, not a retirement program.
The payroll tax is a F'n joke and needs to be fixed, either as a flat tax on all income or rolled into income taxes leaving us with a flatter, but still progressive, income tax with a standard deduction that matches the poverty level.
It would help immensely if we could seperate the arguements for spending and the proper size and scope of government from the tax equity fight, they really are two seperate issues.
Obamas plan sucks, but McCains plans are a joke too, they seem to be simply an attempt to put together enough votes to win an election, rather than an attempt to actually address the economic problems or create an equitable tax system.
