I say GREAT!!!!!  (if we have to have socialism)

But...

Call it "Social Security version 2", scarp the current SS tax BS and leave MY 401K alone!

I would rather see that become Social Security (actual accounts) vs payouts from the general fund.

I can see in the future where if you have a 401K you will not get SS. We need to give this to people who didn't invest in their future. Same old socialism, people make bad decisions and we get to bail them out.

That's the least of your problems; I absolutely guaranfuckingtee you that if this plan is ever implemented the funds won't be there for you when your retire.

Just like social security.

Yep, I heard about this a couple of weeks ago. The market will get absolutely hammered if they do this. Why? Because I know a lot of people who will liquidate their 401K before the law is implemented. I know that I will, penalties be damned. I'd rather get at least something back out of it now, than wait for the government to spend it all.

Additionally, my understanding is that what these people want to do is use the funds in your new government run "401K" to buy long bonds. Quite interesting that this comes out when just a week or so ago Paulson tried doing a long bond auction which failed, so he changed them to short term treasuries.

Gee, nobody wants to buy long bonds, so we will force the citizens serfs to fund the US government's pork spending by buying them. They'll certainly need it once Obama is elected and he institutes all his new "free" government programs.

Yeah I am sooooo stupid to manage my 401k that I moved all my money to the Savings fund (only 3-4%) a year interest over 6 months ago. I didn't lose a thing you socialist pricks.

Wake up people we already live in a socialist country so get used to it. We have a Republican administration that is attempting to NATIONALIZE the banks!!!!!!! Under good ol' "W's" tenure the U.S. Dept of Education has nearly doubled, we have seen the creation of a Federal prescription drug care program which will dwarf Medicare in both cost and sheer scale, and last but not least the creation of the biggest most inept bureaucratic monstosity the world has ever seen called the Dept. of Homeland Security. When you have communists such as Hugo chavez now calling bush his "comrade" because he is doing the exact same thing that Chavez has done to his country in the past decade you can assume that the signatories to the Decralation of Independence are spinning in their graves at 10,000 rpm right about now.

There is no reason to fund a 401K if the Govt sticks ther mitts into them.

At that point, hiding cash would be a better idea.

Waldo,

It is rotten shit.

But having talked with numerous economists... I can assure you that "Means Testing" for social security benefits will be a reality some time down the road.  One economist specifically said that it was likely that anyone who was a professional or had a college degree would some time down the road be "Means Tested" out of social security benefits.

David Walker has some interesting words about the long term budget issues.

Going forward, I propose Congress establish universal Guaranteed Retirement Accounts and the federal government deposit $600 (inflation indexed) in those Guaranteed Retirement Accounts every year for every worker. Every worker (not in an equivalent defined benefit plan) would save 5% of their pay into their Guaranteed Retirement Account to which the government pays a 3% inflation-indexed guaranteed return. Workers would earn pension credits based on these accumulations.

So... they tax me more, and put some of that money into an account that I am also forced to "contribute" 5% of my pay, and in return I earn 3%?

Sounds like a great way to wind up eating Alpo in retirement.  But, hey, who cares, when there's also Socialist inSecurity and Medicare and other massive entitlement programs that will all be bankrupt by then, right?  Cradle to the grave, until the burden on the few working people left is too much and the whole mess collapses.

I hope that doesn't mean we can't be friends.

Agreeing with everyone all the time is boring and it leads to intellectual stagnation.

Look at the GOP for example...

Sure.   Just pick the right one, and sign a prenup even if its not romantic.   Understand that like a poker hand, things can go south really fast and the hand you end up with 5 rounds down the line may not be the one you thought you had at the beginning.
