I'm assuming these guys do the same thing in the Guard that they do in the Navy.
Gunner's Mates come in flavors and work on the ship's guns (both ship defense and handguns/rifles/shotguns) or missiles. They do maintenance on the weapons - hydraulics, gear trains, etc. They may be used to man the defense crews - normally run by the Master-at-Arms rating. Aviation Survival Technicians work on the pilot's survival gear - they sew harnesses, maintain helmets, radios, and other survival gear. |

yeah, I'm in the Coast Guard Reserve. Paul was pretty much right on...the Coast Guard ratings are very similar to the Navy ratings. If you really want to get a feel for what they do, contact some GMs and ASTs in a CG unit near you (lots of CG units in the Great Lakes area, I believe). GM school is in Yorktown, VA, and AST school is in Elizabeth City, NC. Calling the schools might get you some good info too. Recruiters sometimes have good info, but the info my recruiter gave me about my rating (Marine Science Technician) was a year or two old. The men and women out in the fleet are the ones you should really talk to.
