robbed, at gunpoint, in her own classroom

A fifth-grade teacher is still in shock after being robbed at gunpoint in her own Sacramento classroom.

The gunman walked in just as she was wrapping up parent conferences last
Thursday afternoon at Freeport Elementary School.

"Short time later, there was a knock on this door. There is no pane of glass
in the door, so the teacher came to the door, opened it, and the subject with a
dark hood on came inside, pointed a gun at the teacher and demanded her
wallet," Sacramento City Schools Police Sgt. Vincent Matranga said.

The teacher handed him her wallet, and the robber ran off.

"She doesn't like to talk about it. It was a very traumatic experience for her,
but she came the next day, bless her heart. That's how dedicated she is,"
               principal Jody Barker said.

A safety bulletin was sent out to all the school sites Wednesday. The fliers urge teachers to go home
before dark, before they become targets in their own classrooms.

Security is tighter at the school now, and there are plans to build a parking lot closer to classrooms. And
floodlights will be installed by the end of the week. "We still love children. We like what we do, and we're
sorry that some people don't respect us," Barker said.

To put this crime in perspective, this is the first time a teacher has been robbed at gunpoint in a
               Sacramento school classroom.

The principal is now telling students that it's no longer safe to play on campus after school.
