SUCKS. It sucks the fucking suck. It sucks anything that can be sucked. It sucks everything from doggies dodo to a dingo's dingle berries. It sucks watermelons through a garden hose faster than Jenna Jameson. It sucks 2000 times worse than ME.

Try to make a long story short....my harddrive was crashing on me and my recovery discs didn't get burned right so I had to buy a new harddrive and operating system. Rather than buy something that won't be supported soon I opted for Vista. Not disappointed in the least bit. Runs great, and infact I think it runs better than XP. Love the sidebar gadgets....that shit rocks!
I have heard that you have to have a higher speed machine to run Vista and with at least 2 gigs of RAM. |

PEBKAC. Most people that complain about Vista are laughable. I've been using it for over a year both at home and work with ZERO issues. Pretty much any environmental variable that "annoys" you or you don't like can be changed or disabled. Most of the complaints about Vista come from people who are unable to adapt to change or try to run Vista on a turd of a computer. This pretty much sums it up... |

This rant has been done before. Yawn. More profanity is needed and a pic of bullet holes in your Vista disc would get you a couple more points. 5/10 That being said, I dual boot XP and Vista on this computer. Vista can be made to work if you have enough RAM and CPU. Disabling Aero is mandatory. I run XP most of the time. Vista hangs when opening apps. Takes forever to get settled during startup. I ran Vista exclusively for six months. It just seemed like having a Ferrari with a lawnmower engine. Looks good but has no power under the hood. XP is ready to go the minute the desktop comes up. Doesn't hang and seems to just run faster. |

I concur with the OP after spending a few hours fixing a botched Vista SP1 update-ended up having to delete files in a friggin' ACCESSORY program to get it to boot.

There is a steep learning curve....and some older programs won't work with Vista..

I'm with you. Once I learned how to turn off the freaking Nannyware crap that comes in default ON mode, I have found Vista to be the same as XP. Course, I am not a computer dude and do not push the machine much. |

I don't think Vista sucks if the computer has the resources to run it. I do think there are a variety of features that make me say "WTF were they thinking?"
Why is it difficult to get to the freakin' power off button? Why isn't there an icon for My Computer? (I know you can change these, but how many people don't.) |

Except it's a bloated piece of shit. I was stuck with that epic pile of crap for 6 months at work until I commandeered an XP machine out of sheer frustration. - Oh, you want to run this, sorry, no can do. - Oh, now I'm shutting down IE7 and throwing this bigass dialog box in your face that you can't dismiss, eat that m-f! - Oh, now I'm shutting down your Visual Studio 2008, your stuff that wasn't saved is lost in space. If you wonder why, it's because I can! Vista is this decades Windows ME. |

You know, if you spent 30 seconds on a google search or asked the wise minds of arfcom, you could figure out how to disable that in about 3 clicks. But yeah buddy, VISTA IS TEH SUXOR!!!! Those "do you want to do _________" popups are protection for all the dumb shits out there that click "yes" on any window that pops up and end up installing viruses and spyware on their PC because they're too damned stupid to know the difference between a legitimate program and CoolWebSearch. People complained because XP wasn't secure enough, so MS added some security features, and now they bitch about it. The same complaints were said about XP, believe me - I remember it. OMG it's slow!!!! OMG I can't find my old icons!!! OMG!!! It's bloated!!!

I built my own machine and other than a bad motherboard and a bad stick of RAM the system has been running fine overclocked with a 1600 MHz FSB and the processor at 3.4 GHz. |

Vista is designed to sell hardware which in turns sells more software through the Dells and Gateways of the world. I run Vista on my laptop (and I do not love it), XP on one of my desktop (and I do not hate it), and I also have an iMac which performs better than both for the hardware it is running on. Of course, Apple has issues all its own and it costs too much. I can dual boot to Linux as well, but never do. Anything unix like I need to do I can pretty much cover on the mac. If I want unix for a day to day OS I'd use Solaris anyway.

I bitched and complained when winME came out and stayed with the good stuff (win98) for a while. it only stands to reason that I will enjoy my XP until it's unsupported and vista's compatibilities/price comes down.
I run Vista on a rig that has much better hardware than this one, but XP runs much better with less.

Fuck it, I'm foing back to the store, return this nightmare and buy a MAC.
And YES, I turned off all that bullshit that's nothing more than a ram hog. And the security on this version will not allow me open a new tab in IE7. It opens up a new fucking window. And every time I try to go to the next page here and on other boards it opens up in a new page. Hardware can't handle it?...120 gig hd 3 gig ram dual core processor. Dude did I fuck up and buy a Dell? |

yes but unstable as hell and with very little driver support. just when one OS starts to work smoothly and most of the kinks get worked out, they drop another turd on you. in a year or two Vista will be my primary OS. |

RAM hog? I'm on a MacBook right now, with 4GB memory. I have seen it get down to less than 12MB (yes twelve megabytes) of free memory, and it runs fine. People that bitch that Vista uses a lot of RAM don't understand how it works. When you load a bunch of programs, they occupy RAM to function. When you close them, you EXPECT that RAM will be wiped clean and will be available. But many OSs today do not just simply wipe that RAM clean - they leave it so that if you open the applications again, guess what, they're ALREADY in RAM! BAM! However, if that RAM is needed, it will be overwritten as needed. THUS seeing a lot of RAM being 'used' is not necessarily a bad thing. |

I run it with 2 GB RAM and an Intel Q6600 and have never experienced even a slightest hit in performance. Eats anything I throw at it. I can play Half Life 2, while burning a CD, have photoshop open, and 5 other apps and it runs fine.
