Hey guys,
I am looking for a inexpensive .22 bolt action, magazine fed (woops almost said clip! ;-) Anyways. I was looking at a savage today, Looked pretty nice, Any suggestions? Any place to get spare mags? Thanks. Also, What kind of accuracy can I expect, especialy with CB longs at about 15 yards. Thanks!

-Jared

Edited to add accuracy question.

I have a Romanian 1969 .22 training rifle.  It's a nice gun for it's price.  A great deal.

Accuracy is pretty good.  At 25 yards I can hit about a half-dollar size target pretty regularly.  Still havne't taken it into the range yet.

Spare magazines are expensive though.  The cheapest I've got them for is $15.  When you consider the gun is only $60 and the size of the 5 round magazine, it seems like a rip-off...

I have had good luck with the Marlin's Glennfield line of .22LR bolt guns.  I had a model 25 (may of been a 20??).  I never had any trouble with it.  I paid like $69.95 for it brand new (may be a little more now??).  It had a 7-shot magazine.  Replacement mag's were like $10.00.  I just plinked with this rifle.  It would hit soup cans at 50 yards time after time.

I got sick of working the bolt and sold it to by a Marlin mod 60.  I paid like $89.95 for this one.  It has a tube magazine.

I always see a rack of older .22LR bolt actions in most gun shops I go to.  These are store name brands, and were made before the need for serial numbers.  They are not in bad shape, but not as popular as Ruger 10/22's.  I have seen give away prices such as $35.00 to $50.00 on some of these.  In most cases the shop-owner will take anything because he has had to dust them off for years.  I have even seen one given away for free, when a guy had his kid with him when he had bought a new shotgun.  The gift of that first .22 rifle, made a long-time loyal customer out of that boy.

Good luck on your quest

Yeah, I have a Montgomery Wards .22 single shot bolt action rifle.  I bought it for $40 to pop squirrels.  I actually scoped it and zeroed it to 50 yards, and it has totally decent accuracy.  I'd rather have a Romanian with a mag feed, but whatever.

I agree about the Romanian, but the clips are getting harder to find.  Have you looked at the Mossberg 44US from the C.M.P.?  Last time I got one they ran $80 like new in the box, but the mags are running around $35-45.  Depends on which model Savage it is on where you can find the mags.  Those off-brands like Monkey Wards and Western Field are some good old beaters for just something to plink around with.  But my favorite is a 10/22

I just got one of the Romanian training rifles. It looks pretty good, has a nice front sight blade, and flip up rears, for 25, 50, 100 meters. I'm taking it to the range saturday. I'll let you know how it shoots. $49.00.

Go with the Romanian, it is a great little .22.

My range even has a Romanian league every Sunday. They sell them for $60 new.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I saw the Romanian's go for $39.00 in Shotgun News. Friend has one, OUTSTANDING rifle for the money!

With a CZ Zkm452 and a cheap scope, you can put all the 5 rounds of the mag inside one inch at 50 meters...

I have a Remington SCOREMASTER . It looks almost like a REM700 and is mag fed. It has a very long barrel about 26". Very accurate. I would say it is about 50 years old. My grandfather bought it new for my dad.Action is very smooth.
