IMHO, the Army National Guard soldiers assigned to the airports are not properly armed. The M16A2 is a medium range, battlefield weapon. I don't think it is well suited for a fire fight in an enclosed area with numerous, panicky civilians running about; there might be more casualties among the civilians than among the bad guys.

What weapon(s) would you recommend for the National Guard, and a future airport security force?

I don't think the National Guard units should even be in the airports , they are not trained and qualified for that mission.

Citizens carrying any weapon they want without a permit. Local cops come only when crime committed or in progress. No federal or military force.

They're making the airport people feds, and the NG is already there.  Why not retrain the NG guys for airport duty and give them SWAT style training and MP5's?

They should all go home.  A military presence is not needed in our airports.  It's just a showpiece and is being used to keep unhappy passengers in line.  I just about threw up when I saw gov. Easley at the airport being escorted by some dumbass Nat. Guard idiots in full battle gear (gotta wear the LBV dontcha know) carrying their M-16s at low ready.  Who are we kidding here?

Seriously, an M9 Beretta or 1911A1 would be plenty of firepower.  If it isn't, then they better start fortifying the entrance roads to the airports with sandbag bunkers, razor wire, and machine gun towers.

My kind of policy! Only problem is, in this day and age, how many people could we reasonably expect to be carrying on every flight?

I'd still like to know exactly what the NG guys are doing there. Sounds like they could be replaced with cardboard cutouts with no change...

After I got off of active duty I went into the National Guard (read: No Goes).  Personally I'd feel safer if the National Guard was armed with their weapon of choice - the donut![^]

Normally, any 9mm Tactical Carbine would be good for such a situation. But, If the SOB is wearing Body Armor. They need to teach these guys to take head shots, then arm them with 9mm Tactical Carbines and Pistols. The only issue is if the SOB takes hostages and uses cover, etc... A Rifle should rip through the cover, but has too much penetration for normal use. Possibly arm the average Gaurd with an MP-5 and M9. Then have some snipers with .308 Rifles, just in case.

BTW, we need to let the average joe carry concealed in airports and airplanes.

When I go to work, I look at the current state of security. I wonder "how come I can't be armed." I look at how everyone does the security checks and patrols. It makes me puke.[puke]

They should have .50 cal Grizzlys, with 9mm for backup.
