Isn't there a penny test to check the depth of tread. Inspection is coming up and I don't know if I need 2 tires or 4, thanks.

I believe if you can see the top of Lincoln's head it's time for new tires.

There should be small ridges on the inside of the tread......wear indicators....

It is a a penny, or 3/32ths of an ince.  There are wear bars going from side to side molded into the tread.  If you can see a bar running sideways across the tread pattern, the tire is worn out and the PoPo can give you a ticket.

Use the wear bars for a reference. They are small bars located between the tread about every 6-8 inches or so. Generally about 3/32 tall. If they are below 3/32 then they need to be replaced for sure.

You're usually better off with 4, anyway.  Keep them rotated and they'll last longer.

The only exception to that is if the car is a POS.  Hence why I spend tons of money on tires for my 2 Jeeps, but just wait until the tread starts to come apart on my '96 Nissan.  $26 for 2 new tires, baby!
