Someone told me today that all the credit protection companies (like the guy who advertises his SSN) do against someone stealing your credit is to request the 3 credit reporting agencies to freeze the credit reports, that is not release the credit report to anyone. The theory is that no one will extend credit to anyone without the credit report.

If this is true, the service could be had for a one-time fee of $10 X 3 agencies = $30.

Additional benefits are that there won't be any more credit card solicitations.

IS THIS TRUE? Is the credit report freeze effective?

that guy is being sued by a lot of people, and his identity has been jacked dozens of times since he started putting his SS# on TV. Only a matter of time....
