9mm vs 45, against vests.....

I was talking to a guy today about vests(he sells them for a living)

we were talking about the "levels" and he was saying that it isn't the

caliber so much as it's the SPEED of the round that the vest deals with

Apparently 3A will deal with most of the pistol rounds(1600 and below?)

He also stated that one of the "guidelines" is to get a vest
that will defeat whatever YOU carry, for obvious reasons.....

I brought up that the .45 would probably be stopped by the
lowest level vest because of the low fps that they usually run

Just thought I'd mention it

Known fact.

A level IIA vest will defeat a 9mm out of a 5" handgun, but a 16" Keltec 9mm rifle will punch right through it, but a IIIA vest should stop that threat.

The smart best is to have a vest with SAPI plates like mine, and then there are no issues.

Be aware that most vests are only rated to be hit once, now if a vest was hit multiple times, then it all best are off. Yep, the venerable 45ACP bullet can be easily stopped lowest rated vest, whereas the 9mm NATO because of it higher velocity needs a higher rated vest in order to stop the bullet.

I think 17hmr out of a 12" revolver would go through a vest, but that's just me.

Interesting.   I'm guessing hardball would produce better penetration.    Agree?

eta:  but who's going to load up with hardball 9mm.

Yeah, isn't that the reason for the Mozambique Drill?

It's not just speed but sectional density also. There are 165gr 45 rounds that travel 1400fps but they will be outpenetrated by 9mm rounds that are slower.
