I had the fine pleasure to pay my respects to one of the greatest heroes this country has ever seen this weekend. My dad and I made the trip to Pall Mall, TN to visit the grave of SGT Alvin C. York and to also go the house where he lived. It was definitely one of the top events in my life. It was an awesome feeling to go into his house and see some of his personal belongings. It is something I will never forget and something I look forward to taking my kids to someday.

The Sgt. York AA system couldn't track targets very well. Being based on the slower M60 chassis, it could neither keep up with columns of M-1 Abrams nor Bradleys.

M-48 chassis actually. Never understood that, there were certainly no shortages of M-60 chassis.

I remember back when...and IIRC, your coments about the tracking system (same as the F-16 at the time(early 80's)) were valid. The Sgt York was well before the bradleys and the M1 was quite new at the time. (my memory isn't that great for a system that was slated to come out some 24+ years ago and never did)

I was there a few years ago. One of his nephews was there talking about him. I think he worked for the Park Service or something.

Must have been the same gentleman I talked to. I noticed his last name was "York".

M-48 chassis actually. Never understood that, there were certainly no shortages of M-60 chassis.

Among other things if the guns elevated and the turret tracked to certain bearings the empties jammed up between the gun system turret and the chassis and stopped it from traversing.

Took a whole bunch of good systems and sub-systems and then Ford couldn't put them all together in a package that worked.

IIRC, the State of Tennessee gave Sgt York that farm house and maybe 200 acres of farm land.

If correct, well deserved.

My Grandfather (my dad's father) and Sgt. York were cousins.

Lot's of tough people from Eastern TN.
