We might make the move from western Colorado to New Hampshire.

I've been trying to think of ways to get my shit out there.  I'd have to go through NY and  possible MA with handguns, silencers, and semi auto rifles that don't conform with certain states AWB's?

I know there is a Federal law that states that you can transport anything as long as it's egal in both the origin as well as the destination state.  Am I right on this?

+100

A traffic stop in NY could easily turn into front page news.

How do you drive to NH without going through NYS? Canada is NOT an option.

Canada.
Yeah I am sure Canadian boarder police are going to let you into their country with cans.

I would just bury the guns as far into the U-haul as you can get and don't get pulled over.

I have never been so happy to see PA in my life.
That is me driving through MD when I see family in PA.  Long 9 miles.

You don't have to go through MA. If you are driving a moving truck build a wooden crate, seal everything inside it and load it into the truck as the first item. Pack all your other crap around it. Just observe all the traffic laws, make sure you have the rental agreement and be sure all your lights are working. You'll be fine.

If you end up in jail IM the Penguin and he'll bail you out.

Unfortunately you have to at least go through New York to get from there to here … Your best bet is probably to cut across Pennsylvania, pick up Route 84 to Route 87, follow that North up through Albany then cut over to South Eastern Vermont on a secondary highway … You'll only be in New York State for about an hour and a half if you stick to the highways, and will bypass Massachusetts completely. Once you're in Vermont you can get over to NH at your own pace.

Christ, what has become of this country where people exercising their Constitutional right to keep and bear arms have to move like they're on the Underground Railroad.

Yeah, last time I moved, I just laid the safe back side down in the trailer, and used it to store all my broken down rifles.  I used towels and cardboard to separate everything and protect them.  Worked out pretty well.

I'm thinking this is my best option, along with driving like a saint - set the cruise control at the speed limit.

Yeah, I'm still working on trying to get her to stay out here.  All of our family is in NY, and I need easier airport access to be able to fly to Florida more frequently.

Don't remind me about leaving CO.

I'd make sure all the guns are taken apart and in the back under a ton of stuff. Then just drive extremely carefully and obey all the traffic laws. If you get pulled over, you might get a cop who doesn't know or care about the federal law for transporting firearms and he may decide to take it further. Then again, you may get a cop who does know what the law is and respects your  rights. You just never know.

The cans worry me though. They are one of those things that don't "seem" legal, so most people assume they aren't and don't know the truth.

NH is the next to lowest taxed state in the nation and has better gun laws than CO. NH has everything an outdoors man/sportsman could want and a high tech low unemployment and no welfare economy.  The surrounding states of VT (No CCW req.) and ME (CCW at 18) are also super gun friendly. NH and ME also have some of the finest hunting and fishing in the U.S. if you are a hunter or fisherman.

Keep the Cans and guns in the gun safe. If they pull you over, they wouldn't be able to even see what was inside unless you opened it for them, which you wouldn't. Problem solved.

NH needs more freedom loving citizens to kick the taxachusetts assholes back to taxachusetts. AFAIK 70% of the NH population is opposed to a state income or sales tax.

NH state law preempts a local jurisdiction from regulating firearms and the state constitution protects the right to bear arms "All persons have the right to keep and bear arms in defense of themselves, their families, their property and the state". Open/concealed carry of firearms is even legal in the NH state house.

AFAIK NH is the only state in the union that provides for the overthrow of the state government.

The doctrine of nonresistance against arbitrary power, and oppression, is absurd, slavish, and destructive of the good and happiness of mankind.

Ahh.  The more I read and hear stuff like that, the more I want to move there.

Although gun laws are generally great here, the Kalifornicators are coming, and I think the complete state will be Dem. come November.  I do love it here, though.

You travel through NYS at your own risk.

NJ in theory does recognize USC 926A

http://www.state.nj.us/njsp/about/fire_trans.html

All firearms transported through the State of New Jersey:

The following guidelines are provided in order to assist law enforcement officers in applying New Jersey's firearms laws to persons who are transporting firearms through the State of New Jersey.

  1.       New Jersey laws governing firearms permits, purchaser identification cards, registration and licenses do not apply to a person who is transporting the firearm through this State if that person is transporting the firearm in a manner permitted by federal law, 18 U.S.C.A. 926A.
  2.       This federal law permitting interstate transportation of a firearm applies only if all of the following requirements are met:

     A. The person's possession of the firearm was lawful in the state in which the journey began;

     B. The person's possession of the firearm will be lawful in the state in which the journey will end;

     C. The person is transporting the firearm for lawful purpose

     D. The firearm is unloaded

     E. The firearm is not directly accessible from the passenger compartment of the vehicle

     F. The ammunition is not directly accessible from the passenger compartment of the vehicle

     G. If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, the firearm and ammunition must be in a locked container other than the vehicle's glove compartment or console;

     H. The person is not

      1. a convicted felon

     2.  a fugitive from justice an addict or unlawful user of drugs, or

     3. an illegal alien

     I The person has not

     1. been adjudicated to be a mental defective

     2. been committed to a mental institution

     3. been dishonorably discharged from the armed forces, or

     4. renounced his United States Citizenship

  3. A person who is transporting a firearm though the State of New Jersey in the manner permitted by person's possession 18 U.S.C.A. 926A, see Section II above, need not give notice.
  4. Procedures for Investigation of Conduct Involving the Possession or Transportation of Firearms

     A. An officer who reasonably suspects that a person is transporting a firearm in violation of New Jersey law should make reasonable inquiries in order to confirm or dispel that suspicion.

     B. In a case where circumstances reasonably indicate that the person's possession and transportation of the firearms my be permitted by 18 U.S.C.A. 926A, the officer should make reasonable inquiries in order to determine whether the person's possession is permitted by that federal law.

     C. If reasonable inquiries lead an officer to conclude that the person's possession is lawful under either New Jersey law or 18 U.S.C.A. 926A, as described above in Section II, the officer should promptly allow the person to proceed.

     D. Whenever an officer has probable cause to believe that a person's possession of a firearm is in violation of New Jersey law and not permitted by 18 U.S.C.A. 926A, as described above in Section II, then the officer should make an arrest.

NY isn't that bad, most highways are 65 and you won't get pulled over unless you doing 80+

Just stay the hell out of NYC and you'll be fine, a lot of the upstate counties are fine with firearms.
