Yeah yeah, I'm bored, but, honestly, I wonder what percentage of males in this country could do it? Say ages 15-65. The way obesity has shot up, even in high school, I wonder if even 25% could.

I can do 55 in 2 minutes.  Know it because I just did it.

But I would doubt 10% could push 20 in a day.

Sheesh.  20 pushups.  I'll bet less than 25% can do that.  A lot of people can't even do 10.

I'm 41, 195 lbs, with a little bit of a belly and some flab, and 45 minutes ago I did 75, right before my shower.  It makes for a good start to your day.

Oh, I think 25% could do 20.

I could, but barely.  I am an out of shape turd.

Did 67 in 1 minute last week for my PT test. As well as 20 pull-ups, 67 sit ups (1 minute), and a 1.5 mile run in 10:01. And I'm 40 years young.

There's something to be said about having a proper fitness/weight ratio. I know guys who weight 250 lbs and can run two miles in under 13 minutes. They ARE out there, you just have to look.

That being said, I don't want to know the answer, as I'm sure it's depressing. Also, I'm assuming we're talking about CORRECT pushups, right? I mean, arms breaking the plane, keeping the back straight? Moving as a unit? That sort of push up? I know a lot of people who claim to do pushups and when I see them, I have to laugh.

That must be the military in me coming out.

Push ups do not an athlete make. I know plenty of overweight people that can do quite a few push ups. However, that said, those same people get winded walking up a flight of stairs and couldn't do a pull up or sit up if their lives depended on it. Its all a matter or overall fitness.

Yeah, but can a 300lbs person do an actual push up? One of my friends in high school could always bench as much as the football team could, but he only had to move the bar, maybe a foot before it hit his chest. As someone said, I don't mean till your stomach hits the floor and back up.

I would guess less than half.  Before I joined the army and before I began getting ready to join, I could only do about 15-20 pushups without a break.

Now I can easily do 40 with no breaks and over 60 in 2 minutes, and I hardly ever work out, and when I do it's for about 5-10 minutes.

We have no way to gauge it. There is no official "Overweight" and the BMI(Body Mass Index) is a load of crap as well.

Really? Where is the border between fat and skinny, underweight and overweight?

p.s. I'm not talking about people whose weight restricts their mobility.

I'm terribly out of shape, and I just did 20 to see if I could. So I'm going to say a much higher percentage than that, though I won't venture to say what.

The word "overweight" may be bullshit, but what I see isn't. Face it, Americans are fat! Plain and simple. I travel worldwide as part of my job and am amazed at the lack of fat people in European Countries. Greece, France, England, Spain, Turkey, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, etc.  They have an overwhelmingly disproportionate lack of fat people (as compared to the US).  Are there fat people in Europe? Absolutely. Do I see as many of them there as in the US? Hell no! However, when enough McDonalds and KFC permeate the European markets, they won't be far behind...

The eyes don't lie....

I guess I am the minority optimist, but I'd say 60% of active age (15-50) guys.  I find 20 push-ups is pretty easy and I think most guys I know would have no problem.  It is different with guys older than 50 for the obvious reasons.

Average 80 non-stop.
Depends on the previous day workout.
Sometimes I can push it to over 120 for a couple weeks,
but the shoulder does get a bit sore.

However how many can do pull ups with a 60lb weight attached to their body?

honestly I think it depends on what age group. I am sure more men ranging from 18-40 would be able to than men ranging from 50+

I am 35, overweight, and I can easily do 20 push ups.  Then again, I also bench press 80% of my body weight on the free weight bench OR 167% of it on the machine bench.

I do pull ups with a 25lb dumbbell tied to my weight belt.  Usually get 6-8 out of it.

I was really suprised to find that a lot of people can't do a set of 20 push-ups with good form.

Even though I'm older now (39) I've kept up with my workouts.  Just the other day I did a 200 push-up workout.  I started with two sets of 50 and then 4 sets of 25.

I'm trying to improve my non-stop number which seems to be stalled at 85.

What's even worse is the number of folks who can't do pull-ups. I can do 15 dead hang pull-ups without too much trouble but when I was in my 20's I could crank out sets of 30.  I'll be happy when I get back up to 20 reps...

I can do lots and lots of pushups. No problem.

I can do 10 pullups in 1 set. Add a 60lb weight, and I'm probably in the 1-2 range.
