Jason Hooker from Crestview, Fla., center, carries his M-203 rifle (an M-16 fitted with a grenade launcher) as he and other Marines of Charlie Co 1/1 of the 15th MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) make their way to board a helicopter, on the flight deck of the USS Peleliu somewhere in the northern Arabian Sea, Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001. These Marines are part of the 500-strong force ferried in overnight by helicopter to set up a bridgehead at an airbase in southern Afghanistan, within striking distance of Kandahar, the Taliban militia's spiritual home and final redoubt. Just a dumb question from a civilian. Do those two marines hiking up the hill really need all of that gear?

U.S. Marines relax against their full battle gear as they review a list of English words translated into Farsi issued to them Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, on the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu somewhere in the northern Arabian Sea before the launch of the assault against a secret airstrip in southern Afghanistan. The list included phrases such as "Lie down on your stomach!", "We are Americans", and "We are here to help." (AP Photo/Jim Hollander, pool)

You would think it would dawn on someone to get web gear and packs in something other than woodland camo...  Would match the rest of the uniform just a LITTLE better, don't you think?

I am sure that huge pack isn't going with them into combat.

Benjamin

They will have something smaller. Like an assault vest and maybe a fanny pack or something

Another dumb question: why are they the only two out of all those pictures not in desert camo?

Maybe they just don't feel like spray painting their gear.

A few possibilities:

1.  They are half of a 4 man recon team on a 4 to 6 day training mission.  Any attempt to resupply would compromise them, so they must pack everything.  That is a lot of food, a ton of water, an ass load of batteries for the comm gear and other devices, sleeping  bag/cold weather gear for night time, ammo, claymores, iso pad to keep the rocks at a tolerable level.

2.  This is a training exercise.  Train with more weight then necessary so when you go for real you are better conditioned physically AND mentally.

3.  Administrative march from one base camp to another with little possibility of enemy contact.

4.  Because the Staff Sergeant said so!

Former Staff Sergeant of Marines, Dave Peacher.

ok, it takes a LONG time for the supply chain to gear up and get you some desert cammies. those guys are just training in turkey. probably rotated in from somewhere else. YES, they need all that stuff. NO you dont need web gear and packs in desert cammo. even in woodland camo you are hard to see in the desert. YES those are NVGs on the helmet. for further information regarding issue and supply in forward areas or traning routines i suggest gathering up your birth certificate and social security card and high-tailing it to your nearest Marine Corps recruiter. they'll be glad to help.
