Thanks for the wonderful post (as usual). I'm ashamed to admit I've never fired mine! |
I don't even have one. |
I have a rifle chambered in .30 Remington, which is ballistically very similar to .30-30.
I used to have one .
It was so worn out that the action was so loose it was tricky to get the next shell in reliably. I should have kept that gun. I traded it for a Marlin .357 lever action that got stolen. That .357 was one of my favorite guns I ever owned. I need to get another one. |
Thanks for the pics and descriptions and I may have to pick one up very soon.
I've always wanted a Winchester.
I'm in line to inherit a Teddy Roosevelt Commemorative, but it's in the PRK, so I've never shot it. |
I love mine! My parents got me one for my 16th birthday. I was happy as a clam with it and still am today. (23 now)
Well, you ought to be ashamed. Get out there and shoot it. You will then say, "Wow, this is a great gun. Why did I wait so long to shoot it?" |
They certainly are fine rifles, but I prefer Marlin lever actions. I have a weak spot for a nice Savage Model 99 too.
I always thought it was a 'thuddy-thuddy'?
Good post, as usual. |
That is one of my all-time favorite calibers and platforms. I am a bit more partial to the Marlin, just 'cuz that's what I learned to hunt with.
Thanks for the write up. |
Now that was a fun read...I've always admired those rifles.
HH |
Yep. I tend to remember Mr. Browning for the Ma Deuce, the 1919, the BAR, and others. I sometimes forget about the great 94 Winchester and other sporting arms that he developed. |
IIRC the lever action was not for sport when introduced in it's day the now fudd lever action was an EvilBrownRifle designed for killin injuns and criminals |

Thanks. Nothing says 'classic' like the Winchester 1894. I have two of them, one a pre-64 made in 1956 and another made in 1974. Unfortunately the pre-64 was not taken care of very well by the previous owner and needs to be reblued.
The old lever action .30-30 is a very underestimated weapon. They are handy, light, hold a decent number of rounds, and some specimens are very accurate, especially the Marlin lever guns.
I shot a .65" three shot group with one the weekend before last using the Hornady "Lever Evolution" ammo. |
Nice rifle... but how come only three rounds in the tube? The tube beneath the barrel is long compared to the rounds, it looks like it can hold more than 3.
Great job O_P, I always look forward to these threads.
and in on first page! |
Well put OP- (as we have come to expext from you)
I would like to add that the 30-30 is a fine cartridge for cast bullet reloads. I have found that many of the recoil pads similar to yours are not real soft. Not sure if they started that way or became hard with age. A more mordern style pad will actually be quite a bit more comfortable . I don't have pads on either of my 94's but I will admit I am such a recoil weenie I have considered it and will avoid shooting them with only a thin shirt on. Most folks would consider the 30-30 to be mild in the recoil department but it is a centerfire and not too heavy so it will not be comfortanle for the recoil shy folks. |
From a practical use perspective, I'd prefer the Marlin. From a "fun to shoot and fun to own" perspective, the Winchester is my favorite. |
Yup. It was the 1880 equivalent of the assault rifle. |
+1, These threads are awesome. I've spent many a night browsing through your website, reading all the cool facts. |

Another great post O_P!
I bought a Model 94 back in the early '80s. Paid a whole, whopping $125 for it. Closeout sale when my favorite funstore was going out of buisness. I don't shoot it much and still haven't harvested a single animal with it. |
I have two, an older made in the 70s model and one made in probably 03 or so, an AE. Both are 20" rifle models that will hold 5 in the mag plus 1 in the chamber. |
I would have to say the Winchester 94 is my favorite rifle. Don't get me wrong, I love my AR, but theres just something about it that I love when shooting it. If I could fine one in a pawn shop for a decent price, I would take it on the spot.
Many thanks.
I should have mentioned that. It is a fine round for cast bullet loads and can give very fine accuracy with well-developed cast bullet loads.
My pad is still soft and does a good job of taming the recoil. Like you, I can stand heavy recoil if I have too, but when I do a lot of shooting (which is any time I go to the range ), I usually wear a PAST Recoil Shield. I learned at a young age that a purple shoulder doesn't really make you tough. It just makes you sore. |

Takes their head right off. |
Maybe it's just his rifle. I'd have to go dig it out to confirm, but I'm pretty sure my wifes 94 holds 7 rounds. |
You might be suprised at how many friends here have asked me to do a write-up on the 94 Winchester and the .30-30. Lots of us love them. Maybe it has something to do with either our first deer, or John Wayne. |
94 carbine will hold 7 in the tube, always carried that in mine for deer hunting. Glad to see you guy's 'finally' (re)discovered another nice old design.
Just a note - The /30-30 is a REAL pleasure to shoot when you shoot cast bullets with pistol powder, does about 1600fps for me and it is VERY nice.
I traded 12 pre-ban 15 round S&W 5906 magazines for a used one (pre Angle Eject) for my son in 1995.
You are not kidding! Seen that yuck ! |
Sorry guys, a mis-type on my part. It holds 7 + 1. I fixed the write-up. Stupid keyboard. |
Yep. Thanks. Fixed it. |
Yeah, but it's hurting my eyes!!! Good post, as usual. |
I have a Savage Pump-Action .30-30 that my grandfather hunted with, my dad hunted with, I hunted with, and now my son hunts with it. I will not buy him his own rifle until he kills a deer with it.
When he kills his deer with it, 4 generations will have killed a deer with the same rifle. Great caliber for killing deer with. |
Great post.
Coincidentally my cousin recently recieved a pre-64 model (1959 to be exact) 1894 in the same manner you recieved yours, my father decided to give it to him as a HS graduation present. He's a great kid I'm sure he'll take care of his like you have taken care of yours. |
I love my levers! I have both Winchesters and Marlins. Great rifles. I always take one to the range no matter what else I am shooting that day.
Good post! |
One of those, along with a similar time period revolver is on my 'gonna get it eventually' list.
