Tamal (Moe-Ron) is in the hospital. He is in an induced coma, has been for a while now, doctors aren't sure exactly what's going on.

I got an e-mail from him Friday morning the 19th of June saying he was sorry about not getting back to everybody, seems he had a 104.4 temp and pneumonia. He had just graduated from Oregon State ; hell of a graduation gift I thought.

Come to find out he was back in the hospital Saturday and by Sunday the 22nd he was having seizures about every 45-minutes. Doctors weren't sure (still aren't sure) what's going on so they induced a coma to keep him from having the seizures.

At this point in time the CT scan and the three MRIs have been negative. All tests sent out have returned negative, but more are pending. The seizure meds weren't controlling the seizures as the doctors were waking him up from his coma. The more awake his brain, the stronger the seizures became. So, to protect his brain, he's now back in the drug induced coma.

Tamal needs help, prayers, good thoughts (however things like that work for you) and money. Some friends have set up their PayPal account for donations to him. He did just graduate, don't know that he's got a ton-o-money and has no insurance; he's probably going to need all the help he can get. If you can send $5, $10, $20... anything, I'm sure he and his family will appreciate it.

Have you been there and witnessed all of this, or is this second hand accounting of the events?

How would donations help him? Does he have insurance? I can't see donating funds every time someone has a crisis, it really cheapens the whole "community get together and help someone" cause.

Please explain why donations are needed.

Prayers are in good order, I will pray for his full recovery.

I can tell you this about Good Sam in Corvallis, they are a good hospital and they take good care of you whether you can pay or not.

My mother has been in there a couple of times, including a heart bypass. She is an 11 year survivor.

Update I was sent from last night...

The good news first -
The 3rd MRI yesterday was negative.
Today all the tests from his 2nd lumbar puncture (LP) were (all) negative (testing for things like HSV, Lyme Disease, West Nile Virus, etc.).
Once again the doctors are stunned.

The not so good news is that his seizure meds are not working - his brain continues to be irritated and show seizure activity every hour or two (as well as with physical stimulation) on the EEG monitor (though we don't see them physically because of the pentobarbitol coma).

Tamal should be up at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) by now, he was moved up there today. Medically he's stable, still in the coma, but the seizures (not clinical/outward/grand mal) are continuing every 1-2 hours. No one has seen anything like this - 3 neurologists, and a sleep/seizure specialist. OHSU offers a different set of brains, having had different exposure, and better access to resources. Plus, being a university hospital - they may have more up their sleeve. They have a neuro ICU, plus there's an infectious disease team up there - so even though they aren't focusing on that right now - it may jog ideas a different direction if it fits any pattern that team can recognize.

Not great news about the EEG. They will probably continue the coma for a while to let his brain cool off. Seizures begat seizures, so they can snowball. Hopefully, stopping the electrographical seizures will allow them to wake him up. If there isn't a neurologist ( or even better an epileptologist) involved, I would ask for one.

Unfortunately, thats why doctors call what they do a "Practice", because most of the time, they don't have a clue and they truly are practicing.

One would think that with all the medical knowledge in that one particular hospital, someone would know what to do.

I hope he pulls through in spite of the lack of medical knowledge surrounding him.

Tamal (Moeron) has been a personal friend of mine for almost all my life. We both grew up near in each other in Los Angeles. I can vouch for the authenticity of his condition.

My prayers go out to him and his family and I thank Chris for setting this up.

Lotta times I agree with JH225, but hope and pray that the doctors working on Tamal get everything they need to help him and do all the can. I'd be grateful though if we can keep those comments out of this particular thread. Thanks.

Lee0302, Tamal's mom we telling me stories about you two as kids a few days ago. Something about a steep hill and getting in trouble when you were little.

Update from Tamal's family for 7/2...

They are planning to move Tamal into a deep(er) level of coma since he's so unresponsive to the seizure meds, and will periodically try to bring him out of it to see if the seizures return as he wakes. He's still having way too many seizures, and is too lightly sedated. It'll be "brain rest" that could last weeks, or even months.

My little brother is a senior at Oregon State this year.. this hits close to home.

Situations like this are frightening as hell, when the docs can't get a good handle on root cause. OHSU is the best, though, he's in good hands. Prayers out.

I almost hate to put a face with it. He sounds like a great guy, and he has been dealt a bad hand.

The good news is that he doesn't have a big encephalitis or a brain tumor causing the seizures. Neurologic diagnoses are often untreatable or cause permanent damage, thus no obvious etiology can be a blessing in disguise.

Give the coma time. I have dealt with a case like his before, and we were able to gently lower the sedation after about a week.
