Gateway MX7120.
Just bought a stick of 1gig PC2700 from Staples that was on sale. Computer has 512k onboard memory with an expansion slot for an additional amount of memory. I have been running a 512k stick in the slot, but bought a 1 gig to replace it with. Computer specs state it can handle up to a 1 gig stick max. Which is where I'm at. Seems when I get a lot of firefox tabs open or multiple applications I get the blue screen of death with a page fault error or other error. I then have to power it down, and do a cold reboot. I thought the memory stick may have been bad, exchanged it for another one and still the same thing. Is there something that I missed here? Some of these errors are: Page_Fault_In_NonPaged_Area NTFS.SYS 0X00000050 (0XBB5OB364, 0X000000001, 0XB9CEF32, 0X00000002) ADDRESSS: B9CEF32 BASE AT B9CE4000 DATE STAMP 45CC56A7 DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 
When I put the 512k stick back in it's fine. ? |

Another bad stick of RAM, or your motherboard just doesn't like it.
Is the onboard 512m stick PC2700 as well? |

does it list what speed your memory needs to be?
2700 seems slow. |

512k stick? I haven't seen those since the early to mid 1990s. That might be your problem, your computer is 15 years old.

Check the specs of your laptop at Crucial and make sure you're using the proper memory. 2700 does seem slow for a newer laptop.
If you have the proper memory...install the memory back into your PC and run chkdsk on your laptop. I had a client who we took from 256 to a gig of memory. He laptop freaked out like that. I ran CHKDSK and it's worked fine ever since. Right mouse click "My Computer" and choose properties. Click on the tools tab check for errors and tell it to fix anything it finds. It'll have to reboot to have exclusive access to the drive. I'd give you a better step by step, but I'm on a craptastic Vista machine and the memus are different. |

Crucial.com is saying:
DDR PC3200 I went to PNY.com (The Memory mfg) and they are saying that PC2700 for the 1 gig stick???? I am running XP Media Center with SP2 The laptop is two years old. Bought in 2006. |

I bought the 512k stick when I bought the computer because it was dirt cheap at the time. Much cheaper than the 1 gig stick. The 512k that Im' running is a 2700 |

I've never heard of that error coming from goofy memory, but its possible. If you can, go back to the state you had before (old memory stick) see if it still happens. At least that way the problem would be isolated. Then try another brand of memory, see if it still happens.

It might be an incompatibility between the two sticks of memory. Try running with just the original stick, if the problem goes away remove that stick and run it with just the 1 gig stick. If the problem goes away you've found the problem. You can also try swapping the slots there in, but that probably won't have any effect. You could also run one of the free memory diagnostics, but I'd try running with just one stick first.

Reset your pagefile to system managed and run chkdsk.
otherwise you may have a driver not playing nice. |

I can't do that. The 512k is "onboard". I added another 512k PC2700 to it a while back. I'm upgrading now to 1gig and thats when it's giving me the problems. (So I will have 1.5 gig total. |

Yep. Runs fine with the onboard 512k and the additional 512k stick of PC2700. It acts f'd up when I swap out the 512k stick adn put in a 1 gig stick. I have two of these MX7120 laptops and it's doing the same thing on both. Adjusting the page file did not make a difference. |

Same thing used to happen to my POS laptop from Alienware. Shipped with 1 bad stick of RAM. After that stick was tossed, everything ran somewhat ok (besides overheating issuees).

Did you check to see if your BIOS is mistakenly set to use 3200 memory? (The OEM stick could be higher tolerance and "getting away" with it, whereas the new stick is not. Finally, did you buy high density or low density memory? Some 'puters don't play nice with "high density" chips. Look at the chips. If the 6th & 7th letters in the code are "04" then its high density memory. If its "08" then its regular density. Even chipsets that read the whole high density sometimes don't play nice with it. |

Well looks like I got it resolved.
I returned the memory that I purchased and got a 1 gig stick of Kingston PC2700. Started it up and it has worked fine since.... Maybe the computers have a preferred brand? |
