I am so sick and tired of hard disk drives. My virus scan has been running for over an hour and a half. Damn things are loud and slow.

We ordered a new laptop for a VP here...solid state drive was a *$1000* option

I don't see why, because flash memory has become super cheap.

It takes small, expensive hands to solder all those SD cards together!

Yeah, my hard drive in my laptop was not big enough. I was waiting for them to come out with somethign bigger than 100gb that didnt cost over 1000 dollars. 64 gb are in the $300ish range now.

I ended up buying a new laptop with two hard drives raided to 360gb. When I get that filled up and need somethign bigger im hoping they are way down in cost by then.

Why don't you just use platter based hard drives for file storage?  Save the fast SS drives for OS/programs/etc...

Err? 360gb isn't much space on a computer. Mine has over 3200gb. Maybe that's why the damn virus scans take for hours...

I already carry around a backpack full of 'toys' for this thing. My back can't take much more. I don't like having to deal external drives anyways.

It would have to be above 100 gb to be worthwhile for me. Well, now it will have to be at least 250gb with my new laptop.

Looking forward to the day,
as platter based drives are really not very durable or long lasting.
I have RMA'd a LOT of hard drives

Though 500Gb of storage for $80 is awful hard to bitch about.
Just added a Terrabyte here and pondering another.

They make external cases for laptop hard drives to interface via USB.
In other words... really small external
Just buy whatever laptop HDD you want and slap it in the chassis.

The wife has a nice porn collection on DVD's along with a 61 inch TV. WTF would I watch it alone on my "tiny" computer?

I can't wait for the day too.  Not to mention there won't be any moving parts, thus making the machine more quiet than they already are.

its more than 1 flash memory card.

Its like 10 or more ran in a raid configuration is how it was explained to me.

Thats how they achieve such awesome speeds, and they also last longer because it will switch from one set of flash cards to the next to keep the read/write cycles down on each card.

I forget the numbers but i thought they were only good for 10,000 read/write cycle before beginning to fail.

SSDs truly do need to come down in price. As soon as they hit around ~320 GB at a reasonable price I'm totally getting one for the OS and games to run on. A 1 TB platter should take care of all file storage needs.

I never understood the appeal of sitting on your couch and spanking it to your HDTV. But considering the market for high def porn, I guess I'm the weird one.

I do, but only the important stuff like my Quicken Data file and a few others.  I have more space available--maybe I should start using it?

SSDs will be nice.

I have a 120GB drive in my MacBook now.  I need more space so I can create some new VMs to play around with.  250GB 2.5" SATA drives are just over $100, so I might get one.

I'd LOVE a ~320GB SSD, but when they are made, they will be astronomically expensive.  It takes too long for technology to trickle down.  They'd sell a ton if they were priced lower.

They're coming.  We just got some eval sample 250gb (really 256gb, due to mapping for possible bad sectors) drives at work.  They're smoking fast, and should be more reliable than current moving drives by a considerable margin.  I set up the test suite on some of them just before leaving work, should know more on monday

my data just isn't that important.

If I lost every hard drive in my home, I'd just buy new computers.  All my email is in my Gmail account.

eta:
and anything I have that is important, I email to myself.
