Ok, here is the situation.  I run a small side business providing sound reinforcement services to dance groups, events, rallies, and such.  It does not make a lot of money, but it is fun.  I even get to do PA for a machine gun shoot at our local gun range this fall!

Anyway, in order to learn more about audio stuff and tap into some more experienced players in the biz, I joined an on line forum about a year back dedicated to sound reinforcement.  The had an odd requirement - no aliases; everyone had to use 'real names.'  So, ok, whatever, I made up a fake name, registered, and happily participated in the forums for about a year.

Last month, a guy on this board posts a comment that everyone should be careful what they post because people might find it.  Apparently, his personal stalker found him via the forums because he used his real name.  I posted a response that said basically 1) tough break, dude, and 2) who the hell would use their real name on a public forum especially since the folks who run the forums do not verify the info, I sure as hell do not.

Well, I guess that pissed off the geriatric site admin, a well known elderly curmudgeon in the audio business, who disabled my account and demanded I send him a copy of my DL!!  I guess proving him an idiot in his own forums was more than his tiny ego could take.  I told him I would be happy to send an ID and asked which state he would like the ID from.    Photoshop is your friend.

He did not like that, so he killed off my account.  A few weeks later, I created another account.  Stupid me forgot to spoof my IP once, so his system flagged me as a possible reincarnation of my other alias and I got a PM that he is concerned I may be some other naughty person.  Now, he is once again asking for a scan of my ID and admits that they don't usually do it.  For now, I am ignoring the asshole.  I work in IT security so my tracks are well covered and he has no chance in hell of knowing who the heck I am.

I am trying to decide what to do to this guy.  I figure one of these options:

1. Photoshop my alias name onto a DL and send it to him.  I have already PS'ed McLovin's ID into my new alias, but it might be too obvious.  A few minutes in PS will probably do the trick and I get to laugh behind the asshole's back.

2. Ask him to send his ID first so I can verify he is who he claims to be, then sign him up for every free gay porn mag I can find.

3. Post the name of the site and the offending asshole on the web and let nature take its course....not that anyone here would ever do anything legal.  heh

4. Say f--k it and walk away.

Whaddya think?  Mind you, this is a free, public, and open forum.  I basically pointed out that their policy of using 'real names' is rather silly and pointless.  Silly me pointing out the obvious.

no offense but you sound an arrogant computer "security" geek that didn't play by the rules and got banned...

FWIW, you blew your own cover, so i question how well your "tracks" really are covered...

Well, the best he could get would be the NATted address of the local wireless service.

Yeah, I admit it, I poked the bear and got to see the claws.  Honestly, I don't want to mess up this guy's site - too many good people on there and I do not care to do anything illegal.  Sometimes the best way to teach a fool is to let him have his way.  I guess that is why the last option will probably be the best.  I just can't abide tyrants and fools - I know because I have been one or the other a few times myself.

I would never, ever, ever for any reason even support a guy who thinks that using real names on a forum is a good idea.  Forget about faking ID's... since that gives the guy a feeling that he's doing the right thing.

Send him a polite email saying that you can make more money on sites that choose not to invade your privacy, and move on.

4.

You violated the terms of use of the site.  If you don't like the terms and don't plan to abide by them - don't sign up.

I'm going against the grain, I like the gay mag option.

So, how long have you been running the Audio Forum

ETA: I would just let it go, not worth the hastle to play his games.

So far, this sound like the best suggestion so far.  Too many other sites out there to get lathered up over this one.  I am so glad ARFCOM is much more reasonable  (**hugs monitor**).

+1

Though all people with hall monitor personalities deserve to be sent gay porn the real problem would likely be finding some they don't already receive.
