The sixth of eight “solemn assemblies” commemorating the Springfield 1908 race riot will be held at the International House of Prayer, 624 S. Sixth St., at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The roughly hour-long, interdenominational ceremony will include music, prayer and a brief presentation about the riot.

On Aug. 14, 1908, a white mob, angry after being kept from lynching two black inmates in the county jail, turned against black residents and businesses in Springfield. After two days of rioting, seven were dead, including two black men who were lynched, and dozens of homes and businesses were destroyed. The riot led to the formation of the NAACP.

The end of each solemn assembly is marked by a group walk to one of the city’s eight race riot historical markers scattered throughout mostly downtown Springfield. The assemblies, which focus on racial reconciliation, are sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance of Springfield and the Praying for Revival All Year Committee.

Also Saturday, Springfield Walks historical tours will lead a 90-minute guided tour of riot sites. The tour, which begins at 10 a.m., starts at the Lincoln family statues on the southwest side of the Old Capitol Plaza and ends at the current Statehouse, Second Street and Capitol Avenue.

Riot tours, led by costumed guides, also will be offered at 10 a.m. on June 14, 21 and 28; July 5, 12, 19, 26; and August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Tickets can be purchased at the Tinsley Dry Goods store, 209 S. 6th St.

What has the country come to when riots and their affects are celebrated or memorialized? Who ever might have started them?

In a hundred years, our descendants will remember the November 2008 race riots.

It's gonna be held at an IHOP, eh?  

Why, this is the crap that we have moved past in the past 100 years but some a**holes gotta keep this crap going huh. Commenmorating riots, yeah thats the answer.

2 days of rioting, and only seven dead w/ a few dozen buildings burnt? Pffft - somebody's 'riot-fu' is weak!

commemorating those same events...
