Interesing configuration..
What's that flat looking thing on the top of the handguard in front of the scope? What's the small cylinder attached to the scope? What's the radial cut in front of teh axial cuts on the flash hider? Is that a 14", or is it a 16"? What's the lethality of that short barreled rifle compared to a 20" (Do the bullets tumble and fragment as effectively since they're slower?) Why the googles? |

I immediately purchased this copy of Newsweek when I saw the cover photo.
I also noticed that his A2 flash suppressor is not aligned properly. Unless of course that's a prototype FS with the cuts at only 10-12-2 o'clock. But to me it looks like an A2 that wasn't timed properly. Isn't the scope an Aimpoint with an IR filter and extra battery compartment? I learned about the IR designator on another thread. Thanks havoc. Otherwise looks like an M203 mounted under an RAS on a 14.5" barreled M4. Don't know what the rail is under the Aimpoint, though it looks like it includes an integral iron sight. Am I close? [:)] |

The "scope" is an AimPoint CompM mounted on an ARMS rail with flip-up rear sight. The cylinder on the AimPoint is where the batteries go. And, yes, it has an IR filter on the front.
The thing on the top of the RAS is a PAQ-4 IR laser. -Troy |

Small parts and springs sometimes fail. Who would want a stoppage due to the cartridge case getting bounced back into the action? Train like you'd fight, and you'll fight like you trained.

Joe Pen looking thing is probably the drink tube for his Camelback sticking out... just an educated guess. And the flash hider (that looks different as a couple of you pointed out) looks a little to me like a Gem-Tech Bi-Lock for attatching a suppressor. It's hard to tell in the pic so I could be wrong. I agree, it looks like it the flash suppressor that a QD suppresor attaches to. But, it sure ain't the KMC version I've seen. Wonder if he has a can opener attached to that thing. And FWIW, I don't think that is worn finish.. It looks like paint to me. |

OK, I see the little mount attachment on the front of his helmet, and I have seen other SpecOps guys with something mounted there, but what is it? It kinda looks like a mini video camera, too small to be night vision gear. Anyone know?
Love the black electrical tape on the handguards. I would never allow anything so unprofessional looking on my M4gery! Just bought a pair of surplus dust goggles, they are flat lensed, I see these are raised somewhat to allow more peripheral vision, but I saw a photo in the paper the other day where the guy was wearing mountain camo, including the rifle all painted up (and the Trijicon NSN) and he had the same goggles as the ones I bought. He was photographed with a bunch of Afghani men near him. I thought the military was somewhat homogonized as far as equipment went. |

As to the flash hider/muzzle brake not being indexed properly here is my 2 cents. The AR that was made for me by a Air Force armorer is that way. When asked about it he mentioned that on full auto (which mine is not) the muzzle climb is not straight up, it climbs slightly to the left. The indexing in that direction eleminates this tendancy.

Our armorers knew how to properly index a flash supressor and our riflmen didnt put bright blue target indicators right over their hearts. Yes, it really surprises me that he took the time to camo his rifle, but has a black helmet and blue bite valve. I dont believe this is a "spec ops" soldier at all. It is more likely an MP of some sort. |

The more I look at this bigger picture the more I think that the FS might just have cuts at 10-12-2 o'clock.
I don't even want to venture a guess as to whether this guy is a specop who was photographed after firing a few rounds (thus the open cover), or what. I guess I'm just trying to look at his setup. I don't buy that a SF operator wouldn't notice that his FS was f'd up. Particularly when he spent so much time dressing the rifle up with camo and accessories. And no, I would not want to mess with this guy, even with an f'd up FS.... |

And chances are shit getting into the chamber etc. is far more likely to happen than a spring breaking,, mister never have a M-16 jam due to shit in the chamber. |

What amazes me is..he's got cam on his rifle,bdu's on,some kind of Bob Vila cam job on his helmet and a big old stars and stripes patch on his uniform. I would think that would stand out more then a bite valve on a camel back.
