My fiance had an infestation of yellow jackets this summer - I think they were yellow jackets at least.

They found a way into the attic and started building this HUGE hive.  They ate away and the ceiling tiles (like wallboard) to make their nest.  Eventually they made it through one of the bedroom ceilings.  We found them on the window of that bedroom and buzzing around - fortunately they did not leave the room.  We closed the door, put a wet towel at the base of the door to hold any in and called an exterminator - on a Saturday night no less.

Well the exterminator gets there and says, "HOLY $HIT!"  He seals up the room and goes to get his suit on.  He finds out where they are coming in - luckily it was around 7:30 and they were coming back to the nest for the night.  He sprays a crap load of poison into the attack from their entry point and seals it with some type of poison foam.  He then goes into the room and uses a huge bug bomb to fumigate the place.  An hour later he goes in and pulls out the nest from the attic - weighed 5 pounds!

Next morning we got the shop vac out and sucked up no less than 1,000 of the buggers.  Never mind what was in the nest that filled a large trashbag!

Read the book Dust by Charles Pellegrino, it's an apocalyptic piece about the near end of the human race precipitated by the dying off of all the insects.

Now it occurs to be that what if you could hose the nest down with some sort of a quick setting resin.  Spray it down at night and trap all of the little suckers in there forever.
