Fire Kills One at Texas Airport

ROANOKE, Texas (Reuters) - One person died after fire broke out on Thursday in the hangar of a small airport near Dallas, police said.

Firefighters said the cause of the fire was under investigation, but that it may have been a case of someone trying to smuggle a butane powered soldering iron through security in a backpack.

Roanoke fire chief Mike Duncan said the blaze was contained to one building at Northwest Regional Airport, which he described as a ``small, North Texas, rural airport.''

Denton County Sheriff's Department spokesman Kevin Patton said the fire was not a threat to President Bush (news - web sites), who is hosting Russian President Vladimir Putin (news - web sites) at his Crawford, Texas ranch about 200 miles to the south.

``There's nothing to that,'' he said. News of the fire affected stock markets in Europe on speculation that Bush was nearby. There were no further details available.
