[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Best Pre-Ban AR15 mags?

Out of USGI, Thermold, Orlite in which order would you rate them. I'm especially intersted in the Orlites because I just bought 12 of them, are there any problems with them? I appriciate any help.

I like the USGI mags. I've got some that are nasty looking but function flawlessly. Don't know about the orlites. USGI mags are still cheap, so I buy them. Check out the magazines forum.

I have some USGI and I have a thermold, the thermold is my doorstop. Stick with the USGI as I have yet to have a malfunction with them. (That might not be to impresssive as I've only put 40 rounds through with my USGI mags...)

I HATE Orlites. You couldn't give me an orlite. The damn feedlips crack on the top rear.... dont leave them loaded.

I a word about Orlites... they SUCK.

There is a reason that the Israelis stopped using them... and switched to USGI.

I have had zero problems from Thermolds.

USGI mags are GREAT... however, sometimes you get an old one that needs a new spring, rust cleaned.. or some lube to work flawlessly.

You've got your old edition of Orlite mags that will not fit or feed properly , the newer ones do. I've got four....for playing around at the range. I keep several mags loaded for "just in case" and they are all USGI contract mags...jackpot-out

Your Orlite mags will probably be ok, I suggest examining the feedlips for cracks and make sure each mag will fully insert into your rifle(s). I also suggest disassembly and cleaning of each mag (unless new) when time allows. When at the range you should go ahead and test each one for function.

Orlites are widely considered to be third best, the reason isn't really about function but about fit and durability. Orlites are also prone to cracking so you shouldn't leave the mags loaded extended periods of time. I recommend you keep the best looking mags for reserve and use the poorest for range use.

I hope you didn't pay that much for them, Orlites have a value of $8-15, but I wouldn't pay over $12-13 for even a new one.

I have several Orolites, and have had great luck with them in all rifles except my pre-ban Oly, and that ain't the mag's fault.

I have noticed several on the market which were used and had cracked feed lips, but they usually looked well used. All of mine were new to like new, and about 4 of them have been loaded for over one year now. I inspected them a couple of days ago, and no cracks have appeared.

The reason I prefer the Orolites over the GIs has to do with fit, quieter operation, and lessened propensity for the feed lips to bend when dropped during practice. I still have several USGI mags as well, but the Orolites are my first line magazines.

Adventure, Center - mil contractor mags.
Also there are some really fine British mags but I can't remember their name.

W. Wolf,
I used Sterlings (and ArmaLites) in my AR-18 and AR-180's but have never used in AR-15's. I'll give them a try.

Best Preban AR 15 Mags?

The ones from GPSS. We have lots of 20 round mags. The 20 round mags are the best in my opinion because, you can shoot them off a rest without hitting the table and you can shoot them from the prone position without getting to high as to make a good target. Plus, they WILL work when you need them the most.

I prefer USGI, the thermolds are very good, and I have never, ever had a problem with an orlite mag. Colt, ASA, Bushmaster and Rock River Arms have all performed flawlessly with orlite mags.

Maybe I'm just lucky.

At this rate, I oughta get some USA mags.
