The plane crashed shortly after 9 a.m. ET, and thick, black smoke could be scene in televised reports. It was reportedly headed to JFK, but the origin of the flight was undetermined. The type of plane and number of people aboard were not immediately known. Television images show thick black smoke rising from the scene. The smoke was seen turning white, which could indicate that the flames were being put out. Fox News Channel reports it was an American Airlines flight 587. All three New York City airports were closed to air travel. They include LaGuardia, JFK and Newark airports. New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was on the way to the scene. CNN said American Airlines confirms it was an Airbus A 300. TV reports also quote the mayor's office as confirming that. Isn't it almost 60 days to the hour and minute since the previous terror attack? [>]:)]
|
|
News is saying that it was going to the Dominican Republic.
Took off at 9:15 AM, crashed at 9:17AM. Eyewitnesses claim it nosedived into the ground. That is why there isn't as much destruction. Av. |
|
Was supposed to take of at 0800, took off at 0915, unknown reason for delay.
Plane lost commo after take off Came down appx 1 mi from airport 246-passengers, scheduled 9-crew |

They are closing down bridges and tunnels in Queens.
The 72-hour kit I keep in my truck doesn't seem that paranoid to my coworkers now. Av. |

Now they are saying within 5 miles. And 1 engine might have been found some distance from the main crash site.

Quoted: And 1 engine might have been found some distance from the main crash site. View Quote Just heard the same.... witnesses claim parts were "falling from the sky" before the plane crashed. It truly sucks to be an airline right now... nobody is going to want to fly for a while. Av. |

I live about a mile away. It's my old neighborhood, I'am heading there now to check on relatives and friends. I'll update whenever I get back online.

This hereby debunks the "flying is the safest way to travel" for me. If something on the ground (car, train, etc.) breaks down you can generally stop and fix the problem. In the air... you're [frag]

If he was intending this as an economic attack and psy-op, he appears to have succeeded. I hope it was an accident, but I don't believe so. Once is an accident. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action.
This is the observance of Veteran's Day, and what better way to kill our airlines than to have this happen 10 days before Thanksgiving, so no one will fly on the busiest travel day of the year. We need to forget this "stop outside of Kabul" BS and "take care of business." |

You can be fairly sure this is a mechanical failure. If it were a bomb or terrorist attack the engine would not have come off the wing. A bomb might take off a wing or destroy the entire aircraft but not the engine. Someone in the cockpit is also not going to be able to get the engine to come off the wing. Something went wrong with the engine.
I am an aircraft mechanic With a major airline, From experience i can assure you that this was probably a mechanical failure....pat |
|
Pentagon says fighters were in route to the plane before it crashed but no details as to why. Witnesses say that fighters were in the air as it hit the ground. Hmmmmm. Sabotaged on ground?? Bomb on board? Highjacked and shot down? Could be just mechanical failure? Does seems coincidental that it was an American airlines, in NYC and yesterday being Veterans day.
Lots of hmmmmm's on this one. |

From FOXNews.com: Bush administration officials said the FBI believes there was an explosion aboard the plane and they are investigating its source.
|
|
OK. I'll ask the question...
What's the range of a Stinger? My estimation is the aircraft was in range. How many did we give OBL? |
|
Did both engines come off? I've been watching Fox and they showed video of one engine sitting in front of a gas station. They also had one of their guys on the phone that said he was in the backyard of a house and that an engine went through the house and crashed into a boat parked in the backyard.

Another guy said he had one 12ft and one 5ft section of plane that he pulled off his restaurant roof and handed over to the police. God Bless Texas |

FBI confirms there was an explosion on the plane. They are trying to determin it's orgin.
From MSNBC: FLIGHT 587 CRASHED shortly after 9:15 a.m. ET in the Rockaway section of Queens on Long Island, sending up a thick plume of black smoke that could be seen miles away. Bill Schumann of the Federal Aviation Administration said there was no immediate indication of what caused the crash, which came two months after two hijacked airliners brought down the World Trade Center. But witnesses reported seeing one of the engines explode and fall from the jet before the plane hit the ground, and Bush administration officials said the FBI had concluded that an explosion brought the jet down and was investigating whether the crash was an accident or sabotage. Could a bird being sucked into the engine cause it to explode?
|
|
Now it wouldn't surprise me if it was a terrorist act.
One engine falling off a plane is rare, but is an accident. There have been reports of BOTH engines falling off the plane. What are the odds of that happening? I think there may have been a bomb on board. Av. |

I have seen the pictures of "BOTH" engines. One engine is the engine core( the real engine) The other pic is of the thrustreverser and translating sleeve. Probably the same engine in 2 parts. This would be normal for a cata of the engine.
There have been several G.E. engine cato's in the last two years. Caused by turbine wheel failures. I have a set of pics of one of ours if someone wants to see them I dont know how to post them. The pics I have were of a cato during a ground runup, we were having oil consumption problems and were looking for a leak when it came apart...pat |
|
I'm thinking there is a distinct smell of goat in the vicinity. Sorry, engines don't fall off of Airbus A300s. I don't want to speculate too much more, but if I was a bettin' man, I'd bet against a maintenance problem and in favor of bad intent.[pissed]

Sounds like the old TWA 800 story might pop up.
Yeah, it sound funny for the engine to fall off. I guess it "COULD" happen. The starter fell off of my car one day! |
|
Seems logic would lead us to belive, or me at least, that this was a bomb. And it sure would be a good time to have a bomb go off just before the holidays. Those terroists sure love NYC. And they sure love American Airlines. Anyone who thinks that an engine just happened to fall off is not with the program. Just my opinion.
Prayers go out to those on board and those on the ground that will deal with this. |
|
The pics were sent. I was not there when the pictured eng blew i got the photos off the net at an aviation site. I cant take credit for them.
Yes an engine can come off the wing, It has happened more than a couple of times. usually you dont loose the aircraft. If the enging KB's though that is a different story.... |

Don't be using logic around here, not many people subscribe to it, and will attack you if you do[BD] Anyway, you do have a point. |

If a bomb had been planted in the passenger or luggage compartments, wouldn't it have blown the fuselage apart before it would have knocked the engine(s) off the wing(s)?
Anyone with the access required to plant a bomb inside the engine or the wing would also, it seems, have been in a position to arrange an engine explosion through sabotage. |
|
Fighters in the air?? 60 days to the minute of the WTC attacks?
I think it will play like this: There was some kind of hijacking in progress, or at least no communication and a diversion from flight plan. We shot it down. Either we were right, and the gov't fesses up, or it was all a big mistake and we never find out the cause of the "accident" |

from paterpk via my email: some of these pics were taken the night it happened. the aircraft was scrapped because of the damage to the wing. the hole in the wing is 3 ft long and involves the fwd spar. when the engine blew it was at 90% power The parts went every were. some through the cabin some into the other engine. the turbine wheel was in the river over a mile away! more from paterpk via my email: the aircraft was schedualed to fly philli to paris but the mechs didnt like the engine. They went out to investigate away from the terminal. Had the aircraft taken off all on board would have been lost. The wing damage was severe enough to cause failure if under a flight load.
