Personal choice here...I like McAfee. Tried both, and I think McAfee is easier for the average user. When I worked in user support, it just seemed that folks had trouble understanding Norton, but McAfee was no problem for them. They both do the job.

Over a year with Norton. Not one problem. Zapped a few nasties before they became hassles.

Panda - diversity is better in nature and in network security.
I went to it because it appends its virus signatures rather than sending entire files each time - quicker over the satellite telephone. |

Give AVG anti-virus a try. [url]www.grisoft.com[/url] It's caught several viruses for me, including one in an email attachment, without opening the attachment. Cost is good, too. Free. Automatic web updates, hangs a "certified virus free" tag (advertisment) on emails [i]if you want[/i].
Best money I never spent. |

McAfee here. I just never liked anything Norton. I think they're both fine virus detectors/cleaners. Just your own personal preference.

I got Norton Systemworks 3.0 / 2000 quite a while back.
It was installed in the last half of '99. This was after they had supposedly fixed serious bugs with NAV 3.0. My son insisted that it messed our computer up, though it has been handy for defragging virus checking, etc. It does seem like there is an increased propensity for crashes. While we did use the disk optimizer, I didn't allow it to fix all the registry problems it thought it found, because I just didn't have total faith in it. Plus, for all the supposed problems, the computer we had put together was running pretty well. I have to agree with him. Over the last couple of years, the machine just seems more quirky. I has detected some viruses, but not a lot. Maybe we're just lucky. I think the next time we will try McAfee or one of the others. Paul, where do you get Panda? |

I prefer Norton, but I like IPE just as well. I like the BlackICE Firewall much better then Nortons.

Norton 2000. Not a problem. prk..I have utilities too. The first time I installed it I installed crash guard. My pc was "crashing" all the time. I dumped the crash guard and just went with the utilities. Haven't had a problem since.

I just had to remove Norton last night. Damn thing just kept my drive active and started to slow down my system BIG time.
Now in 10 years with computers, I have never had a virus. Ever. I just practice safe computing. |

I prefer McAfee. A couple years ago it was my job to choose between the two for 15,000 NT/98 workstations/laptops and 800 NT servers. McAfee performed better and detected more. When Nimda broke, the McAfee folks were working all night to get a detector/cleaner out not only to corporate big $$ customers but to everyone.

I like MacAfee. Norton tries to take over too much of your computer. Norton messed up my old scsi computer a while back, put it's own scan disk and defrag mapping over the original scsi mapped drive. It kept crashing left and right. I took it off and never used Norton again.
