D. Huerta

Terry Lynn Brandt flagged Officer Huerta down and she informed him that her husband, Roland, was at her apartment in violation of a restraining order. Officer Huerta escorted her back to the apartment and he informed Roland that he would have to leave.

Roland agreed to leave but asked if he could get some belongings from the apartment before he left and the officer allowed him to do so. As Roland went to the bedroom, Officer Huerta used the phone to check in at his office. Roland then came out of the back room with a 12-gauge shotgun and killed Officer Huerta. Mrs. Brandt attempted to call the police for help but she was also shot and killed by the suspect.

Police arrived and surrounded the barricaded suspect. The suspect shot and killed himself instead of surrendering to police.

Patrolman Garza was shot and killed after responding to a domestic dispute. Two officers were initially called to the residence at approximately 0745 hours to stand guard while a resident removed possessions from a house. Officers were called back at approximately 0855 hours for another disturbance involving the man and wife. The two were arguing in a bedroom. The suspect had his back to Patrolman Garza while he attempted to separate the two. The suspect suddenly spun around and shot Patrolman Garza in the head with a Mac-10 semi-automatic handgun.
He then shot and killed his wife before chasing the woman's brother-in-law. After running out of ammunition he went back into the home and got an AK-47 and shot and wounded the brother-in-law and then shot Patrolman Garza again as he lay on the ground. The suspect was apprehended and charged with two counts of capital murder and three counts of attempted capital murder.

Patrolman Garza had been with the agency for 25 years.

Officer Morales succumbed to a gunshot wound received three days earlier when he confronted a fare evader leaving the U-Street-Cardoza Metro station in Washington, DC. During the confrontation the suspect suddenly pulled out a handgun and shot Officer Morales in the face. Officer Morales never had a chance to draw his weapon. The suspect then stole Officer Morales' service weapon and two spare clips of ammunition and fled the scene. Officer Morales was transported to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition for three days before succumbing to his wound.
The suspect was arrested in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, several days after the incident when he was stopped by officers for a traffic violation. After a brief struggle with officers he was subdued and found to have Officer Morales' service weapon and two extra clips.

Officer Morales was a Gulf War veteran and had been with the agency for six months. He is survived by his wife, infant daughter, and two young sons.

Sheriff Presley was shot and killed by a suspect who had fled from police earlier in the night. The suspect had fled the scene of a roadblock earlier in the evening and exchanged shots with pursuing officers. He managed to elude officers during a foot chase after crashing his vehicle. Later in the evening Sheriff Presley received a call from a homeowner who's dogs were barking. When he arrived on the scene at approximately 0515 hours he and the homeowner went to a shed on the property. When Sheriff Presley opened the door the suspect inside immediately opened fire, striking Sheriff Presley several times. Although mortally wounded, Sheriff Presley was able to return fire and kill the suspect as well.
Sheriff Presley had been with the department for 13 years and had been sheriff for eight years.

I hate to sound "nit-picky" but the Sheriff killed the guy who shot him, so he obviously didn't get away. So how come they don't know the type of weapon the sheriff was shot with? I don't get it.

I think you guys are missing the point. Rapid_Fire is just trying to say that since whackos are obvioulsy allowed to commit criminal acts that harm police officers, that officers should be allowed to commit crime too. He's saying that because there are bad people in the world police should have absolute power without question or consequence and that he believes people who have possibly been involved in a domestic dispute (guilty or not) should have their weapons confiscated to make his job safer. He apparently does not understand that CRIMINALS will get weapons without that dumbass yellow sheet one way or another. He doesn't get that if someone wants to shoot him they will, law or no law. At least that's what I take from his many sarcastic post titles and subtle implications.

And to Rapid_Fire:
Your multiple posts today are obviously in retaliation of recent posts that frown on unconstitutional actions by fellow LEOs.
If you have a point to make, Rapid_Fire, just make it. Say that police have a difficult and often times dangerous job that is deserving of our respect. But also be willing to say that cops aren't infallable and should be held accountable when they violate the laws and civil rights they vow to protect. If that is your point you can say so in a much more to the point manner, without implications and a holier than thou attitude. Sarcastic posts like "another gross civil rights violation" can lead people to believe that you think law officers are above accountability for their actions. Comitting a crime while in uniform is doubly heinous and is equal to a man in a priests uniform commiting a crime. Using a position of power and public trust is not only legally wrong but morally wrong on a level beyond that of a "common" criminal and should be treated as such. If you agree then you are on the side of freeedom. If you disagree you are neither the good guy you profess to be or a friend of freedom. At least that's my opinion.

Deputy Telen was shot and killed investigating a burglary call at a local residence at approximately 1900 hours. Neighbors of the home had called deputies after they were confronted by a suspicious man who threatened them and then walked towards the house. Contact was made with relatives of the home's owner who stated the owners were out of town. When the deputies arrived they located an open window. They entered the house in an attempt to locate the suspect and as they entered a hallway the heavily armed suspect opened fire, fatally wounding Deputy Telen. The second deputy retreated and called for backup. Responding deputies where able to get Deputy Telen out of the home and transport him to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was apprehended after a five-hour standoff.
Deputy Telen had been with the agency for 18 months and is survived by his expectant wife and two young children. Deputy Telen's son was born on October 1, 2001, and named after his father.

Of course, it is a sensitive subject.  However, why bait people.  It is unfortunate people have to die at work.  If a guy dies in a press do you go to a stamping convention and criticize the toolmakers?    These guys died because someone committed a criminal act and it resulted in death.  A criminal act, get it?  Now if you can develop a model that criminologist can use to predict criminal behavior, you will be able to prevent this type of tragedy.  Until then, it is an occupational hazard.

Officer Stephen Michael Liner Jr. an Officer with the California Highway Patrol, was killed August 12, 2001 when struck by a drunk driver.

Sergeant Gary Wagers, a 22 year veteran of the California Highway Patrol, was killed on March 15, 2001 in a on duty traffic accident. Wagers is survived by his wife and three grown children.

Deputy Sheriff Brandon Hinkle, a member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was killed while riding his police motorcycle on February 14, 2001. Hinkle, a 11 year veteran, is survived by his wife.

Officer Sean Alesander Nava, a 12 year veteran of the California Highway Patrol, was killed October 28, 2000, by a DUI driver in a on duty accident. Nava is survived by a wife and two children.

Deputy Sheriff Steven Parson, a member of the Orange County Sheriff's Department was killed while driving his police motorcycle on June 24, 2000. Parsons, a 11 year veteran, is survived by his wife and two children.

Police Officer Louis Villalobos, a police officer of the Los Angeles Police Department, died March 17, 2000, as a result of an on duty training accident. Villalobos, a 30 year veteran is survived by four children.

Officer Sheffield was shot and killed while manning a metal detector at the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit, Michigan. Security at the building had been increased dramatically in the wake of the terrorist attacks in New York City and the Pentagon. The suspect, who had been waiting in line to go through the security area, pulled a .357 caliber handgun from his bag when Officer Sheffield attempted to search it. Other officers returned fire and wound the suspect before taking him into custody. The building housed several federal law enforcement agencies.
Officer Sheffield was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Officer Russel Miller, a Chino Police Officer, was struck and killed by a vehicle on February 1, 2000. Miller, a 12 year veteran, is survived by his wife and three children.

Inspector Kirk Brookbush, of the San Francisco Police Department, died January 11, 2000 as a result of a on duty helicopter crash. Brookbush, a 27 year veteran, is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Bryant was shot and killed after being ambushed by a man who was being evicted. Officer Bryant was accompanying the owner of a property who wanted the suspect's trailer moved off of the property. The suspect, who was aware that officers would be coming, hid a deer rifle in the woods behind the trailer. As Officer Bryant approached the suspect ran behind the trailer and Officer Bryant gave chase. The suspect then retrieved the rifle and shot Officer Bryant three times, once in each arm and once in the head.
Deputy Clyde Almon Merritt of the Coffee County Sheriff's Department was shot and killed after responding to the assistance call. The suspect was later arrested after being surrounded by officers from several agencies. Officer Bryant worked part-time for the Broxton Police Department, which has five full and part-time officers, and was a full-time officer with the Lumber City Police Department. He had been in law enforcement for seven years and is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
