I am behind CARB enemy lines already but I saw this following note regarding Scepter gas cans on Brigades website:
What's a "CARB" Can?

CARB stands for California Air Resources Board. They established regulations for environmental requirements of Portable Fuel Containers and Spill-Proof spouts in California. Many states have adopted these requirements. The U.S. EPA will adopt similar national requirements in January 2009. A CARB Compliant canister must have the following features to meet these requirements:
• An autostop, self venting nozzle that stops the flow of fuel when the target tank reaches full.
• A single opening for filling & pouring. No separate vents or openings.
• A treated can body for very low permeation.
• Automatic closure. Nozzle automatically springs to the closed position when not pouring.

The EPA will adopt a National Non-Carb Ban in 2009?

The solution is simple. Buy a gas can now. Maybe a variety of sizes, a 5gal/2.5gal/1gal.

Had to used them in MD for the last few years.
There a PIA. I end up spilling more gas with the new ones over the old type. Started using a old Kerosene battery pump to fill up the ATV and lawn mower.

we have these in NY, and they suck i hate them, they actually cause you to spill more fuel because of the extreme angle you have to hold them at in order for them to work, it's got to the point where if I see a old style can on the side of the road I'll stop and take the nozzle if it is good,

They're also impossible to use to refill a car or other vehicle with a gas tank larger than your head (since you need to press the nozzle against something to get it to open.

You can always buy surplus 5gal military gas cans and donkey dicks (fuel nozzles).

That sound like everything else the environmentalists are pushing. Low-flow toilets for example. It takes me more water to flush my crap than with a normal tank.

I havent been able to find a non Algore'd gas can for a couple of years. None of them have freaking vents on them. I figured this had solved global warming and thats why it has been so damn cold around here. WTF?

As of two years ago, only the CARB gas containers are available in Texas.

Believe it or not, Kalifornia has a department just to test and approve gas cans. You can't sell a gas can unless the State tests it and adds it to their list of approved gas cans.

No wonder the state is broke.

Of course, the special approved nozzles don't work either.

Carb cans cant fill a small resevoir like a weed wacker or blower as well as car tanks without using a funnel anyway.
They are a perfect example of a Government F***Up.

When I was at Bass Pro last summer, we were still ordering in the non Carb ones and had the 5gal ones for like $6. They should still be selling them as the main warehouse had a couple million at one point.

Yea, i totally spill more gas with the new ones then i did with the old ones. I never knew that these were mandated, i just thought it was a new gimmic. Go figure. Try to fill a cessna with one of these, or a car, and you just get fuel all over the fuckin place. Yea, way to go, way to save the day california.

Since I'm apparantly going to be stockpiling a few cans for future use, which ones last longer in storage, the plastic ones or the metal ones? The metal ones can rust, but will the plastic degrade and become brittle over time?

If they will still sell them to civilians despite the note on the website I highly recommend the Scepter Red Strap MFC's from actiongear.com(Brigade).
They are not cheap ($40.00) but will last forever(Heavyduty HDPE Plastic).
You can also gets spouts for them as well but again they aint cheap.

Anyone has a link to one of these sorry CARB gas cans?

I ask because I bought a can less than a year ago and it had a different type of spout. I prefer it. I don't spill a drop.

Either the "new" type of can I got isn't a CARB can or you guys don't know how to pour gas.

I hate those cans. They are required by OSHA for construction so that is all we use and they can be quite the pain in the ass with the auto closing lids.

Good thing I have lots of pre-ban gas cans!

Go to the hardware or paint store and buy a metal 1 gal screw top can. Prime the outside of the can then paint it red or what ever color you like. Let the spay paint job cure real good . Now you have a metal gas can.

I love the Simple Siphon. Two or three quick shakes starts the flow. I can drain 5 gals into the tractor or ATV in 2-3 minutes. No pouring or spills. They are really worth while and cheap. Check em out at

CARB cans already here in Maine. They are excellent (honestly) for filling your small outboard motor in the middle of the lake without creating a huge rainbow sheen on the water. Other than that they are a pain.
