When do you believe that human life begins?  When the baby is born?  When the baby could likely survive outside the womb?  At some other milestone or stage of development?  At conception?  I'd be especially interested in hearing pro-choice folks' opinion on this issue.

Although it's probably an impossible request, id like to keep this from becoming an abortion debate thread (we already have one of those going), but rather a discussion of when human life begins.

As soon as a bunch of scumbag liberal feminists say it does.

They can't provide any reasons that make any sense at all, but they have a bunch of nice sounding slogans and that seems good enough for most people.

My person opinion is that human life begins when brain activity begins.  Which is at about 10 weeks into the pregnancy IIRC.

You're looking at the wrong question.

What is 'human life?'

'Life' begins at conception. Those cells start dividing, and the game is afoot. A viable human fetus is a bit later. But left alone and barring problems, those cells will become a human being.

No I don't.  We've had the technology for as long as i've been alive, so I can't say i've ever considered the issue.

Do you think its a possibilty that in the future we could develop technology that could indicate brain activity in, say, 7 weeks?...maybe even 3 weeks?...maybe even 1 week?

maybe even at conception?

A hundred years ago there was no technology to detect brain activity at ten weeks.

Now do you get my point?

Probably the same point, we just didn't know when that was, but could have made a pretty good guess.

Just because our technology is more advanced, does not change the time at which such event occurs.

Besides, we're already far past the point where your fantasy situation of increasingly strong detection finding something previously unfound would have occurred.

It's impossible to pinpoint an exact moment.  Life builds as the embryo develops, until it is more or less full when the child can survive outside of the womb.

A 1 minute old embryo is less alive than a 2 day old embryo, but I wouldn't necessarily call either of them "living beings."

...I know, it's an unpopular view here.

I think life begins at conception.

You didn't ask, but I also think abortion should be legal until birth.

The simple truth is that not all babies are wanted.  I would rather the mother abort the baby than to bring an unwanted child into our world.  Until that baby has air in its lungs its fate is decided by its mother.

If life begins at conception, why then dont they have funerals for them when a miscarry happens before being born?

Since the sperm is alive and the egg is alive before they unite, and since the soul was formed prior to conception, I'd have to say that the life of a complete human being starts at conception.  After conception a human being evolves through many stages before it leaves the womb, then evolves through many more stages throughout its life.  Is a 90 year old senior any more or less alive than a 2 year old toddler or a 4 minute old fetus?  Answer:  No, all humans are in different stages of life and all life is precious.

No, the central question is when a newly created unique individual's right to live outweighs its mother's right not to carry it to term.
