Yesterday Emily, my 8yo daughter and I came
home to find our 4yo Sheltie collie dead beside
our garage.  The autopsy showed she had died
from trauma - a ruptured liver to be exact, but
she had no broken bones.  She was as loyal and
loving as any pet I've ever owned, and we'll
miss her alot.
We buried her facing the road beside the flag pole where she used to lay and wait for us to
get home.  I wrapped her in our "magic" deer
hide (the one from the very first deer I ever
shot) that I used to cover the kids with when
they were sick.  It always seemed to make them
feel better.
This is Emily's first experience with death -
and she's not doing so well right now.  My wife
is devastated also.  Me, well.... I'm a pretty
soft hearted guy once you get past the thick
hide I've had to grow to survive 8 years of
working here.
For those of you so inclined - I'd appreciate
some prayer support for my family.  I can deal
with the loss of a great dog, but seeing mine
in pain and tears is really hard for me to bear.
 Thank you.

Scott

Sorry to hear about it.  I had a Sheltie that we had to put down last year, she was 10, and doing badly.  They are a great breed.

Scott,

I am so sorry, darlin'.... [:(]

I used to try to say encouraging things when somebody lost an animal but after losing my horse, Windy, and feeling pain like I have never experienced before in my life, I realize it's all bullshit.  There is nothing anyone can say to make it better.  There's a whole in your heart and no amount of comforting words can fill it.

Spend the time you need to crying and remembering her... and remember your timetable for grieving is different from other members of your family.

Again, I am sorry....

Do you remember Bishop Fulton J. Sheen from TV in the 50s? His show 'Life is Worth Living' on the Dumont Network actually forced Milton Berle and Frank Sinatra to move their own TV shows from being broadcast opposite his.

Well, anyway, a lady once inquired of the then-Bishop, later Archbishop, Sheen, if her recently deceased dog would be with her in heaven?

'No, my dear daughter, your dog will not see heaven', he replied.

Then she cried and told him that without her dog, heaven would not be the place that it was supposed to be!

'Then, of course, your dog will be with you in heaven, for the Father will make certain that it will be as you desire.'

Maybe pious foolishness on both their parts, but I have always thought that the Father, who knows the innermost workings of all human hearts, would make certain that even this, the smallest of details, would be honored in Heaven!

So I think it a certainty that your Emily will see her Sheltie collie again!

Tell her you have it on good authority!

From an Archbishop, no less!

I'm sorry for your loss.  We had 2 shelties when I was growing up.  The first died suddenly and without warning much like yours.

Shelties are not known for living long, and we were told that they had outlived their breeds average lifespan (they both lived about 10-11 years).  I'm not sure what the average is.

My sister had to put our family to sleep, because I just couldn't do it a while back.  MY DOG would come into my room and lick my face to wake me up on Sat. mornings to go play.

Sorry for your loss.  My aussie pup is only 19 months old & sometimes I look at him and wonder what it'll be like when he gets older...we get attached and love our pets and it hurts bad when they go.

My condolences...  I've had my fair share of putting pets to sleep.  Although I am a cat person, a pet, no matter what kind, is still a member of the family, and the loss can be devastating, especially for a child.  It's even harder to explain it to them as a parent.

THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
inspired by a Norse legend
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

If you dog was outside and people had access to it sound like me that someone kicked it hard real hard.

Too bad cause 4 yrs is not enough.

Give it a month to heal then take the family down to the pet shop or local pound and pick out a new puppy.

Sorry for you and your familiy's loss.  My wife lost one of her cats that she's had since she was a small child a few weeks ago because of someone's cruelty, and it was hard having him put down.  She prays nightly that those who did it do not go unpunished.  I have said a prayer for you and your family, and I hope that everyone is able to work through their grief.

As David said, give it some time and then take the family to the pound or animal shelter and adopt a pet.  Be sure to let your daughter know that you're saving an animal that has been abused or neglected, a very good deed.  Having a new pet makes the loss a bit easier to deal with for the little ones who don't really know what to feel, and I think rescuing an animal in need helps honor the departed pet's position in your family.

We live down a long lane, quite a ways
from the road.  Bridget was (as Shelties
typically are) tire-biter - she couldn't stand
to leave anything alone that moved.  There are
(2) possibilites I'm looking into.  1.)  Our
landlord is a hot-headed SOB, and he's expressed
concern (frustration) w/ her chasing his farm
equipment.  2.)  It's possible that the power
company meter reader might've had something to
do with it also.  I am sure of one thing - she
was not out on the road.  She had the run of the
farm but from a pup we never let her past one
telephone pole about half way up the driveway.
She'd run to it and stop and wait for Emily when
she got off the bus.

What I don't understand is that while she was
playful, she was also really timid.  She wasn't
the kind of dog that would walk up to a stranger, so I don't know how anybody could've
gotten a foot into her.  OTOH, there's no way
she could've gotten hit by a car and suffered
that kind of internal damage without having any
bones broken.  It just couldn't have happened.

This is bringing back awful memories for me.
A few years back (alright, it's been about 8
but I'm still so pissed about it that it seems
like yesterday) our next door neighbor shot my
12 year old border collie, Bandit.  He told my
dad he'd seen Bandit get hit by a snow plow.
Funny thing about it was - snow plows don't
leave 42 uniform, round items in their victims
that show up white in X-rays.....

Months later my step sister, who worked at the
post office overheard this bastard's wife telling someone that her husband had shot some
black dog that had come over to their house
when their dog was in heat....

God help me and dumb SOB that did this if I
find him.  My little girl is crying her eyes
out over this, and THERE IS NO WAY BRIDGET
COULD HAVE BEEN OFF OF OUR PROPERTY.

That's a nice thought, and I appreciate it but
she was $450.00 worth of registered Sheltie from
an excellent and well established bloodline of
show-winning herding dogs.  I think I'll replace
her another from the same breeder this spring.

We never even got to breed her.  [>(]

My best buddy Skwurt died last year while I was away on business in Idaho.

My wife called me that evening at my hotel room and broke the bad news.  Skwurt was a 100 pound Akita that I had raised since he was a pup.

That was one long, lonely, tear filled night.

I told a friend of mine from Wisconsin about it and he emailed me this poem, don't know who the author is, though.

If it should be.....

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad - I understand,
But then don't grief let stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stands the test.
We've had so many happy years,
What is to come holds no fears.
Take me where my needs they'll tend,
Only stay with me until the end
And hold me close and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you too will see
It is a kindness that you do for me
Although my tail it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Don't grieve so that it must be you
Who has decided this thing to do
We've been so close we two these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

My best wishes to you and your family.

You have my condolences and sympathy. Our sheltie was a great friend, and loved to come out when we played football in our backyard. He thought we were all his herd to mind, and wore himself out running around us trying to keep us all together. His next happiest place after that was on the sofa between two of us asleep. He got hit by a car when I was 13 and he was 5.

I wish you and your family well, Scott.

Im sure sorry to hear about this, I have one that I have to get put down soon but I can't bring my self to do it. My dog is a Pup of my first dog that our neighbor shot for chasing his dog, I still rember that day well I was 12 when that happened and Im 27 now, but Im happy that I got 15 years of fun and enjoyment out of the buddie (my dog now) I have had her hips replaced on the hopes of she would live to be 20 but I know when she dose go my son will be devistated and so will I. Dogs become such a huge part of the fammly and When I think of all that me and bud have been through it bring a tear to my eye.

And if you do find out that someone kicked your dog and that is what killed her, Stay calm My Dad spent the weekend in jail for My first dog. But our Bastard hillbilly neighbors sold there house soon after so something good did come out of it.And my brother sniped there dogs right after he shot our dog.One of the few times I can say that I was prould of my bro.
