Battle Dress Uglies
Been wearing mine since I was 17.
Have to laugh when everyone asks me for a set. More often than not, while hunting, I wear my blue-jeans.

after wearing them for  almost 10 years in the infantry, i can say with 100% accuracy that BDU is the acronym for "BATTLE DRESS UNIFORM" NOT battle dress utility , at least in the US Army.

It is "BATTLE DRESS UNIFORM"  per page 179 AR 670-1  Like EX11B said, but I am not sure about the rest of the services.

if you really want to know about BDUs i suggest a visit to your local recruiting station. and bring your birth certificate! we dont call them BDUs in my Corps but then again we dont wear them to the mall and to Wendys like Army guys do. i just dont understand this camo fashion craze lately. i would NEVER pay hard earned money to masqurade as something im not. i just dont understand it. but in the Corps utilities are considered Ugly and you never want to be seen in public in them.

We used to run in "boots and ute's".
...as in UTILITIES.

In the Air Force they are UTILITIES.

Blues are Uniforms and Greens and Cammies are Utilities.

And DvlDog, the Air Force is the same NO public display of Utilities.

Care to put money on that?  I was at the federal courthouse here in town last month for a naturalization ceremony and I was appalled to see USAF personnel show up for the ceremony in their BDUs.  I was even more appalled to see that one of them wore the diamond of a squadron First Sergeant.

Man, I've only been out of the Air Force for 13 years.  I didn't think I'd already be saying, "Back in my day sonny, we didn't stand for that kind of nonsense, no sir!"  [:D]

But you're still expected to have sharp creases and shiny boots (at least when you aren't in the field).

Madmortigan I got out of the USAF in 98 and they were "uniform" then.  If that has changed since then I would not be aware of that.
