Is it just another fad/fashion/unity thing?

Used to be a time that the jock mentality was long hair = fag. (same goes for pierced ears).

What changed?

(FWIW... I'm not even a football fan, I just see the clips on sports newscasts)

They're trying to show that they are unique, just like the thousands of other guys with the same hairdo.

braided hair requires fewer comb teeth. In fact, you could probably comb it with a serving fork.
