'24' star Kiefer Sutherland begins serving 48 days
DAILY NEWS STAFF

Thursday, December 6th 2007, 9:21 AM

“24” star Kiefer Sutherland has already begun doing his 48 days.

The actor checked into Los Angeles’ Glendale City Jail on Wednesday night, just hours after he was sentenced to 48 days for his second drunken driving arrest in three years.

Sutherland, 40, was ordered to complete his sentence by March 30. He could have waited till as late as Feb. 12 to begin serving his time, but opted to get it over with.

“Kiefer made the decision to surrender to custody immediately,”  said  his attorney, Blair Berk.

The actor brought reading materials and some extra pairs of underwear when he reported to the lockup, celebrity news Web site TMZ.com reported.

He’ll spend Christmas, New Year’s and his Dec. 21 birthday behind bars, but beginning his sentence right away allows him to take advantage of his unexpected vacation from “24.” Work on the hit Fox television series has been suspended due to the writers’ strike.

Sutherland  - who won an Emmy last year for playing counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer - was already on probation for a 2004 drunken driving arrest when he was stopped by police as he left a Hollywood industry party on Sept. 25. Authorities said he failed a field sobriety test after being pulled over for making an illegal U-turn.

He pleaded no contest in October to charges he was driving with a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit of 0.08.

They should put a red LED clock in his cell that reads:

1152:00:00

And counts down from there.
