At least here in SATX, most of the gas stations located right next to I-10 seem to more expensive than the ones located some distance from it - and the gas stations located along I-10 in between major towns are even more expensive.

Cheapest gas seems to be in the big city, at least a mile or so from the nearest major highway.

EDIT: If you're driving a diesel, you might still find cheaper fuel at the truck stops on the outskirts of town.

 Gasbuddy is what I use as well.  Try this with a good road atlas that shows county boundaries to pick your stops.
