What to do with old cell phone?

I've got an old (purchased in 2000) bag phone. Pretty much new as it stayed in a plastic bag under the seat of the car for 4 years.

I've no use for it anymore, doubt I could sell it for anything more than a couple of dollars. So what to do with it?

Most cell providers have programs where you can donate cell phones for various causes or have them recycled.

Keep it in the car. 9-1-1 might still work on it, and that call is free. This is the FOPA endorsed solution by the way.

I gave my old cell phone to a fellow employees kid the other day.

He dials 911 on it a few days later and the cops show up....

This phone is so old and large that they would have to send a postage paid shipping crate.

Go to a cell store and ask if they have the number or a place to donate your phone to a domestic abuse group. The people that need the phones will get them and they will be able to call 911 from them and you get about a 200$ tax write off.

+1 I've turned in 5 phones over the years this way, it goes towards helping people.

That's what we do around here. Local church runs a counseling group for victims of domestic violence. So the old Motorola Star Tac (remember those?) and others go to a good cause.

Women shelters / Domestic violence places always need phones. They program them usually to call the shelter and 911 and pass them out to victims that come to stay with them.

Donating a phone might just help save someone's life.

Yep! An old cellphone with a deactivated account can still call 911 systems. Give it to a relative.

I was at FedEx today, and they had a bin with a sign: "Deposit old cell phones here." There were several in the bin. Don't know what they do with them, but there you go: Fed Ex collects them for something or other.
