looking to buy shotgun for the house, thought i found one ,a benelli m1 121 only to find out it,s 20 years old and was advised not to shoot it.would like a semi-auto, was thinking of a remmy 1100 tactical. any other suggestions?

Whatever you get, just load it with birdshot, or dimes, or salt. That's all you'll ever need.
I have been thinking about adding some easily removable gadgetry to my 1100. I would like to be able to switch it between "FUDD" and "Tactical" in a few minutes.
IIRC, barrels are high. |
yea im looking more at point and shoot. |

Remington 870 if you really want the best shotgun for HD work.
If you are dead set on a semi-auto I would get a Benelli M1 Super 90. The Remington semi-autos are good, but are a bit of a PITA to clean. Plus I don't really care for the O-ring design. ETA: Also heard many good things about the FN SLP as well. |
I use a Benelli M1 Super 90. I also use a Mossy 500c in 20 gauge.
if your gonna go with a shottie, 870 or mossie 590.
i had an 1100, damn thing was so ammo sensitive it was almost useless. won't own another. with some training you can fire a pump on target as fast as a semi. |
What's wrong with a 20 year old Benelli? Mine shoots like gangbusters. If it's old, just put a Sure Cycle recoil assembly in it, replace the inertia spring and then shoot the hell out of it. It can take it, believe me. |
One thing to remember is if you have to use it the Police are going to take it into evidence for a while. I use a Mossberg 500 with a 18.5 barrel it's not pretty but it shoots everything I want to put through it and if it gets used and I don't have it for a while I'm out under $300 bucks as opposed to a thousand or more.

Hey,
Check this deal out: www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/95059 Remington 870 $269 after $30 Mail In Rebate!! Kevin "Can't beat that!" |

A breach loading .410 shotgun with birdshot is the best home defense weapon available. When they here that shotgun crack open while you insert a shell, they will piss themselves in fear.
You can probably pick one up dirt cheap as well! |

I agree that a pump is preferable for HD, as it is more reliable and allows you to use reduced recoil loads without worrying about them not cycling the action. Note that you should keep a round chambered so you don't advertise your location when you rack the slide. There's a Benelli M3T sitting next to my bed, so I have the best of both worlds. |
Probably the cheapest SA shotgun you'll find that works well will be a Saiga, or an 11-87. With the 11-87 you'll get into it even deeper buying a short barrel for it (probably $600 or more when you are done and thats starting with a used one).
No, no no! He must get a muzzle-loading double barrel shotgun and load both barrels halfway up the tubes with powder, and the rest of the way with birdshot! Use duct tape over the ends to keep the shot from spilling out, and wear ear protection when firing. It's the only way to be sure! |

over penetration? cant miss with a shotgun? being startled, middle of the nite ,adrenaline pumping ,wife freaking type scenario? |
You do realize that you will have to aim a shotgun just as much as any other gun, right? |
this is gonna be good. getting popcorn now. |
nope, just point it in the direction of bad guy.{small house] |
Or the fact that an AR costs about $900 vs a $300 for a 870. Like a previous poster mentioned, anything you use in a HD event WILL be confiscated as evidence. You won't get it back for a while & maybe not ever if it's a really nice gun. Better to risk being out $230 for the shotgun than a $1,200 customized AR. Besides, the AR is more of a Katrina gun. |

What's wrong with the Benelli? I mean my M1 Super 90 is nearly 20 years old and works just fine.
Mine works very well even with light skeet loads even with a mercury recoil reducer in the stock (came with the gun) and 8 rounds in the side saddle. I might replace springs in it just to be sure at some point in the future though. I assume they are originals and I have no idea how many rounds have been put through it. |

I think you may be over estimating the spread of buck shot or birdshot |
rule of thumb for shotgun spread is 1" per 1 yard.
So let's say bad guy is 15' away. That is only a 5" pattern...You still have to aim! |
And suppose your (insert family member) is between you and the perp. Then what, if you have a shotgun? Precision isn't a shotty's strongpoint. Not talking down your selection, just bringing up a point. I reccomend a Remmy 870 or a Mossy 590. SG |
Well, technically, you don't aim a shotgun, you point it. But you are right. At typical home engagement distances, 00 buck is not going to have a large spread. Aiming/pointing is necessary. |
isnt 00 buck a little big for HD? wouldn't ya still have an over penetration problem? |
You CAN miss with a shotgun, especially with the scenario you describe. |
birdshot is the only reasonable load. |
thats what i am sayin.. put a sure cycle in it and blast away. |
Between this comment and the "point and shoot" comment, I call TROLL. |

There is a rail you can add to mount an Aimpoint or whatever. I think Leopold (sp) makes it. |
