I have cultivated a luxurious 'stache several times but the problem you bring up is what always causes me to trim it

I dunno. I can't stand when mine gets much longer than a #4 clipper guard. I usually trim my chin down to a 3 and mustache to a 2 (goatee). I also take some scissors and make sure my mustache doesn't extend down past my upper lip. That is annoying as hell to me.
