I ain't skeered.
My hobby has moved way beyond chasing fads (not that you are chasing a fad,) but the gods know I used to. My reason is simply: I cannot justify paying to get whatever I need to fire the 6.8 cartridge. Why do I need it? |

I'd like to pick one up for the option of hunting deer (in which case ammo cost isn't a big concern), but other then that... (shrug)

spendy ammo... no guarantee that it'll still be generally available next year (or 5 years from now, or 10, etc.)
I'd want to shoot it too much to spend $1 every time I pulled the trigger, and I work for a living. |

It doesn't do anything that my .308 M1A does better. Seriously, if I need something bigger than 5.56x45mm I'll go to my M1A.

Not scared. I'd simply prefer something in 6mm or 6.5mm instead, just for bullet selection.
No rifle hunting in IL for deer, but I have a .308 WIN regardless. |

Yeah I don't think it is about being scared in fact it makes no sense. I have yet to find a reliable source of 6.8 around here and I don't order ammo online. Maybe it exists here but I don't see it. I am not jumping on a bandwagon that may not have very long lasting wheels. I do reload but not for filling up cases of ammo, I do it for precision rifle shooting. |

For Defense: There's nothing wrong with 5.56x45mm. While I am sure 6.8SPC has better terminal ballistics, its not enough to to switch to a new caliber.
For Hunting: The one requirement I have for hunting ammo is that I can find it in a pinch. If I go on a hunting trip, and need more ammo I should be able to find it at Wal-Mart. For Fun: Its just too expensive right now. I don't have a place to reload yet, so any cheap fun is a no-go. While 5.56 has skyrocketed in price, its still much cheaper than 6.8. Cartridge Popularity: Its still a young cartridge, and its still a possibility to will fade into an obscure cartridge. I've came really close to ordering a 6.8SPC upper, but its just not practical for me right now. When I finally have the room to reload, I will consider it then. |

I'm afraid of 6.8 SPC because my 2 AR-15s are chambered for 5.56/.223.

I may do a 6.8 rifle soon, but it does concern me having both 5.56 and 6.8 rifles and magazines in close proximity during a high-tension moment. Some proper organization and marking could probably lessen potential confusion, but if you grab a 5.56 magazine and load it into a 6.8 rifle during a "panic", things are not going to go your way. Anyway, that is my main concern. Ammo price not so much given how expensive good 5.56 ammo has gotten.

Cost of ammo and the fact that I already have quite a bit of 5.56 made me go with that for my M4gery, but my next plans are for an SPR and I see no reason not to go with a 6.8.

Yeah but they've already got the .308 rifles/ammo. To use 6.8mm, they'd have to go out and buy a new AR upper or other platform to shoot it and then buy the ammo to go with it.

True... but an M14 clone will run between 1500 and 3000 compared to an AR that would run between 1000 and 2000... and the price of ammo is a lot different too.

I was thinking of ordeingr a 6.8 barrel and bolt to add to an extra upper I have laying around last week. But then I decided why. since I don't hunt and paper/steel targets don't care what I shoot then with.
So I will just use the money to buy more ammo for calibers i already own. |

My main reasonf or teh 6.8mm was it had better ballistics then the 5.56mm and close enough to the .308 and it was compatabl;e with most 5.56mm lowers.

True and they already have the $1500 M1A in their arsenal so its already paid for. Now they have to go out and spend another $1500 for the 6.8mm platform plus ammo.

So you're saying I should buy it now when it's expensive so you can get another later when it's cheaper?  Ain't skeered. Reasons why not: It might just be a fad. I should only need it to defend my home, 5.56 works in that environment. Ammo is too expensive for a plinker. Ammo is not widely available. The paper don't care what I hit it with. Most importantly, when the zombies come, where are you going to refresh your supply of ammo? You'll be zombie food while I'm scavenging 5.56. |

That's it for me. I've got lowers, and thanks the enemy of my wife in Topeka there seem to be more coming in every day. Now, I would get a big ol' chubby chub chub to hunt Kansas whitetail (deer) with my AR, but the state says that .223 isn't very nice and I have to be shooting bigger that .240 inch. So how about I pick up a 6.8 upper and mags and put that on one of my lowers for hunting season. Well Zumbo be damned, now we're having some fun! So, where's the best place to pick up a 6.8 upper/mags? |

+1. The 6.5 Grendel is the superior cartridge, IMO, and since I reload practically all of my hunting ammo I'm not too worried about availability. I'd probably buy two boxes of factory ammo and 100 empty cases, do some load development and then load up all 140 rounds with the 'it' handload. I would probably buy just an upper, not a complete rifle. |

For those who mention bullet selection,I'm guessing you're not reloaders? Since the 6.8 uses the same bullet diameter as the 70 year old .270 Winchester, you have a bullet selection from 90-150grs if you reload,including several of the best brands of hunting bullets on the market.
That said, I won't be getting a 6.8 upper unless I can get buckets of cheap brass with "LC-XX" on the headstamp. That would be my primary concern for making it an inexpensive shooter. |

I don't hunt anymore and have never thought that +$1.00/rd was affordable. Especially for punching paper. I just like the idea of new/unusual stuff to take to the range. So until it comes down a bit and becomes available locally I probably won't do it. Same with the .450 Bushmaster. I may change my mind, who knows? But right now I can't justify it. Both calibers would just be toys for me to play with. |
