check out eBay...sometimes a Dyson will show up re-furbished, or from a private owner looking for some $$
We have a Dyson Animal...amazing...I have asthma, and it is the only vac that hasn't bothered me....

I don't know but the last three that I've owned were pulled out of a dumpster! All I had to do was change the belt and put a new bag in them and they ran for years........... Damn throw away fast food society!

This is a good brand, apparently.  People brag when they buy one

Check Consumer Reports.  I believe the top rated vacuums are NOT Dyson.  In fact, IIRC, Dysons suck.  Get one with a HEPA filter.  The HEPA filter really works and really helps.

My wife bought the CR top rated model.  It cost under $300 and was not a Dyson.  It was one of the big name brands.

Besides Dyson, you may want to look into a Lindhaus.  Cheap?  No.  Reliable? yes.

Edit:  Woot.com has refurbished Dyson vacuums regularly.  That's how I bought mine.

I wouldn't trust CR to pick out my socks let alone a vacuum. Dysons do indeed suck, they suck well. Go to a site where customers can review them, not the dopes at CR.

my brother has some serious dust allergy issues and bought one of the miele canister models. he's been very pleased. i can't say for sure it was under 200.00 though. they generally make decent products though.

eta. i believe mrclean4hire usually recommendeds a commercial grade hoover that his people use. light, durable, and under 200.00 from what i recall.

Do Dysons (at $400) really do 5x the job of my Wal-Mart special that cost $80 ?

Had it for 4 years and it still works great.

I think so, YMMV. I had a cheapo and it finally broke. Bought a Dyson and you should have seen all the stuff my cheapo missed. Other people have tried out my Dyson when over at the house and they were sold. Dysons are especially good if you have pets.

10**-4 Torr is a good vacuum
10**-6 Torr is a great vacuum
10**-9 Torr is about as good as it gets here on Earth.

I found the same thing against a Hoover that was probably around 80 bucks too.

It sucked up a lot that the cheap Hoover missed.  I don't know how it compares to vacuums in the same price range, but after 2 years I can say it's a very good vacuum.

And the bagless is teh shizzle.

In a word? Yes.
I have a DC-07 Animal. My kid is the king of allergies and asthma brought on by such. Ever since buying it, the kid has not used a fast-acting inhaler ONCE in 18 months.
OH...and for a test? I vacuumed with my Hoover up-right (which I bought the Dyson to replace). Immediately vacuumed with my Dyson afterwards.
The canister had to be emptied before I was done...THAT'S how much the Hoover left behind.

Ours is a Hoover V2 Windtunnel ( 12amp )

We bought it at Costco a few years ago for around $175 I think. Does not need bag$$ and it sucks like a three headed queer.

Came with a few attachments, the best of which is a 10-15 foot extension hose for cleaning various things.

I would rate it a 10/10

Same with a Rainbow. Follow behind a cheapy and it's amazing what's left behind. We got rid of our carpets and went with laminate flooring instead, so now it's Swiffer.
