16 inches for Rifles. 18 inches for shotguns.

Unless you put it on a lower registered as a pistol you would have to register it as an Short Barrelled Rifle with the BATFE.

Simply file a Form 1 to construct an SBR, pay the onetime $200 tax, then wait for it to come back approved.

I figured it was 16'' , but I wanted to make sure.

What is a bunch of BS?

16" is the shortest that is legal and be non-nfa.

So if you want that (unless you want an AR pistol)

Fill out your request to manufacture a Short Barreled Rifle
Send that in duplicate along with a $200 check to the ATF along with a set of fingerprints and a picture of you.

Get your lower receiver engraved with your name and city

add that barrel to the rifle when you get your stamp back.

Let's not forget the overall length requirement of 26 inches.
Gotta watch that, especially on break open shotguns.

You would have to build it as a pistol.  If that is ok in your state.  Or jump through the SBR hoops.

Don't forget the 26" overall length, that's with the stock unfolded or extended.
Especially if a suspicious person asks you to saw down some shotgun barrels for him.

I remember this being debated here before.

Aren't most underfolding AK's under 26" when the stock is folded?  I believe Yugo underfolders are about 25.5" when the stock is folded.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that was the case.

Wait, whoops.
I totally had that in the wrong order!
You were right, I was wrong, I saw it different in my head somehow.
Man I feel dumb!

incorrect.

the 26" oal requirement is fully extended.

if it was collapsed, there would be A LOT of illegal guns out there.

Just register an SBR.  It seems like a lot of BS. But once it is done, it really does seem to bad.

My 4 incher.

Why 4"?
Because:

How long does sending off the SBR take? Do they keep the $200 no matter what?

Wait has been about 3-4 weeks.

Fill out paperwork. Get your firgerprint cards done. Get the CLEO signiture. Send off with $200 to ATF. At same time send your lower off to an engraver to be engraved with your name, state, city.

So inside of 2 months you can have an AR you can configure any dang way you want.
