Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Will my fireplace kill me?

I have a fireplace, I don't burn wood in it, I just use it with natural gas.  It has both a flue and an outside air vent.  Obviously, with either the flue or vent or both open, heat is lost.  Being natural gas only, do I need to keep the flue and/or vent open, or can I keep the flue closed?

Do I need to get someone to call dibs on my guns?

ETA: No different than disconnecting your flue on your furnace or hotwater heater.

Get a carbon monoxide detector.

That stuff will kill ya.

You must vent it--they are sure to produce CO.

On a NG fireplace, the flue is supposed to be blocked open by an attachment that bolts to it. It leaves it open about an inch to alleviate the danger of CO poisoning. If the flames  yellow, it'll kill ya fellow. Remember it.

I know that many places make the block  code and mandatory. I have no problem with that.
