(Age 17-26) Scores are lowered for older folks-

20 Pull/Chin-ups (No time limit)
100 Crunches (2 Minutes)
3 Mile run 18:00

Example:

Can you pass ace the Marine PFT with ease?

I'm not sure what the criteria consists of for that, but, in my current condition, probably not.

I consider myself in great shape.

What would I have to do to ace the test?

Pull-ups and crunches no problem.

But that 3-mile run is what kept me from going in to the service.
Can't run worth a shit.

Crunches & run most likely.

Pull ups? NFW.

Once you get on the bar, you are "finished" once your feet touch the ground.

Theoretically, if your feet didn't touch the ground, 1 pull-up a day for 20 days would be acceptable.

(If your Gunny or tester did not motivate you to the ground)

I might be on the gurney if I did the Marine PFT.........

Can I pace myself and go down the road on foot for a few miles Yes.....

You'll get there first so I'll take up the slack and watch the back door......

Damn - I thought I had found a loophole!

Seriously, I could definitely NOT "ace" that test today, but I'm pretty sure I could pass it (for my age group).

Yes, I can ace it. But not with ease. I can only do 10 pull ups in a row before a little break.

edit - Unless chin-ups are allowed. In that case no prob!

Exactly. Most people who max their tests are doing regular PT plus hitting the gym on their own time 3-5 days a week.

The best score I got on the APFT was 249 without anything other than unit PT. My last one before getting out was 243 but that was also after minimal PT at best from deployment, and then getting about a month of prep to take it.

I think 'most' people would be doing well above the national average just passing it let alone max.

A 12:50 two mile means he is hauling ass the entire time. I could always do sub 6:30 on the 1st mile but the 2nd one always added 30sec-1m. I think on one I did 6:10 the 1st mile and like 7:30 on the 2nd one! lol

Having been there and done that, many Marines have a problem meeting the standard, and most do not max on it.  Hitting the max on pullups and situps was never a problem.  The runtime took much effort to keep it from being painful.  I never maxed it, but 19.00 was my absolute fastest in boot.  I hate running and always have.  Those who grew up running or were on the track team in school would easily hit the 16.

They get assigned to a mentor.  That means running almost every day and dieting/weight control if necessary.  That is how my unit handled it, and I don't recall anyone being discharged for it.

I've always stayed in fairly good shape.  Could stay in the water for hours.  Bike 100 miles.  Not too good at upper body stuff, maybe 15-20 pullups, 30-35 pushups....

We had a pretty extensive PF thing in high school.  They actually gave you gold or red satin trunks for achieving the highest or second highest levels in the tests.  Swimming in there and an obstacle course (180 yds) with walls, ropes and duck walk things.  I got red.

I'm 41, and I could do the first two, but I can't run that fast anymore...hell, I could NEVER do a 6 minute mile.  Fastest I ever ran 3 miles was 19 minutes.  Fastest I could run it now would probably be about 22 minutes, and I would keel over exhausted afterward.

Do you think 26 is too old to go in? I'm in the best shape of my life - been hitting the gym 5 days a week for 2 years solid now. 5'10" 180lbs. Running is the only thing I'm worried about.

Have you tried a 3 mile run for speed? A 7 minute mile isn't even that fast for someone who puts in a training effort.

Pullups-19~20
Crunches-120 easily
Run-I currently have a broken leg so I do not know. But my last timed 3 mile run was about 22 mins.

So I guess that I would be somewhere around 275

I'm in decent shape for my age and health condition.  I do 30+ min of cardio a day and endurance weight lifting.  But I couldn't pass the test for young bucks for sure.  Had troubles with it when I was in, not built for running.

I could low crawl for 100 yards then get up and run for another carrying gear...then walk 5 miles no problem.

That age range is odd considering that a man is in his prime up until his mid thirties, and some longer. Andrei Tchmil and Sergie Conchar were kicking butt until their early forties in the professional cycling scene.

This was 27 years ago. I still had to do it at Parris Island, and for the first 2 years in the FMF. Had constant leg problems. My body build was larger than the 'standard'. I am 6' tall and at the time weighed in at 210lb, which by the book was over weight. The more I worked out the heaver I got. When I appeared before the medical board (they wanted to throw me out for being overweight) I proceeded to strip to my skivvies and demanded they show me where they wanted the weight to come off. That caused them to re-evaluate me via the Body Mass Index, which at the time was something new to the USMC.

But, no matter what you have to be able to run it all in boot camp. We had to run everywhere. If you were not marching in formation, you were running.

Buy GOOD shoes from a running store, i.e. one where the salesmen actually look like they run 40+ miles a week so they can give you accurate advice on the support and fit, and go hit the trails.  Try to avoid running on concrete and start running no more than every other day for at least a month, if not longer.

I don't know what your % fat is but 5'10" and 180 you may want to try dropping 15-20 pounds, whether muscle or fat, if you're serious about running.  It will help your run time immensely and save some wear and tear on your ankles/shins/knees.  Fwiw, I am 6'4" and 225 lbs in the best shape of my life, I run about 20 miles a week, and I'm just too damn big to keep up with the little guys despite being pretty lean.

Right now, at 40yrs old, I am gradually improving in my ARMY ROTC PT Test scores.

Last Record test was;

50 pushups in 2 minutes
45 sit ups in 2 minutes
2 mile run in 22:10

No excuses but my right shoulder rotator is acting up and my ceiling is 50 pushups until I get it straightened up.

My sit ups have improved as my spare tire has shrunk

My 1st 2 mile run was 35:XX. I finished hobbling with shin splints from hell. The very next test 1 month later I shaved a lil over 11 minutes off the 2 mile.

I have shown very good gains and improvement since starting this the beginning of the Fall Semester.

I dont know about no 3 Mile run in 18 minutes......Hell No.
